Retro Role Cast
"Serious roleplaying games played by deeply unserious people."
We are a tabletop roleplaying actual play podcast featuring games that remind us of our gaming roots! We play in person with real math rocks! We love gritty, high action dark settings with nuance, but aren't too far away from our bitter, cynical, yet still lovable selves at all times!
Currently: Going way back to many of our players' 1e roots by playing the new third edition of OSRIC (pdf available free on DrivethruRPG, fantastic hard copies available through Mythmere Games) with a home cooked mini (?) campaign in the World known as Greyhawk in the classic era. follow along as the PCs navigate the dangerous environments and tricky politics of the Duchy of Tenh/Theocracy of the Pale border region!
In season one we played Low Fantasy Gaming by Pickpocket Press, Its sequel game Tales of Argosa is released, available, and comes highly recommended by all of us, stop by Pickpocket Games on the web for more info!
Season two saw a transition to a modified Version of Old School Essentials (Advanced) by Gavin Norman, one of many retro offshoots of the world's most popular role playing game. We borrow rules and content from many sources, but with Old School Essentials we used (in no particular order), Old School Feats by Eric Diaz, Into The Wyrd and Wild by Charles Furgeson-Avery, Into the Wild by Todd Leback, The Axian Library by Guiseppe Rotondo, and the Monster Overhaul by Skerples, amongst other sources.
With the close of Season 2 and the addition of two new Retro Role Casters we have moved to a more episodic format for Season 3. We are referring to seasons 1 and 2 as our Zero Level Funnel of Podcasting.
Season three and into the first part of Season four the four OG hosts took turns GM-ing one shots, Three Shadowdark adventures because we love Kelsey's fantastic Old meets New game, Mothership to satisfy our love of the Alien Movies and a Halloween special using the Call of Cthulhu rules.

On this episode of Retro Rollcast. Okay, so you're going after the other horse on this wagon. Give me a strength check.
SPEAKER_01Again?
SPEAKER_03Well, yeah, you're digging. And you're half. A 19. This halfling. The halfling is stronger than all you. Yes.
SPEAKER_01I pick the horse up with my bare hand and hoist him above the snow.
SPEAKER_03Maybe because you're so small, you've gotten smart about how to remove things to get through. Because you seem to be picking exactly the right spot in the snow to dig to make everything fall away. It's like when you gopher digging. And you're using the cavity created by the first horse. He's using book learning. He is. He's just intuitive about where to dig here. And you manage to get the second horse to the point where it is now struggling free of the snow.
SPEAKER_01There's like a little cantrip he's using to melt a little bit. He's cheating. Whatever it is, it's magic. It's bullshit.
SPEAKER_03I mean, I can't even move my arms or legs, so I don't know how I'm doing that. Dwarf stickle. I wasn't in the avalanche, so I made three-dimensional snow angels to try to get out. Okay. So you're attempting. Yes. So where did we leave off? I believe Eric was next.
SPEAKER_01I had flipped my die. I think we had gone.
SPEAKER_03And then we seriously work on my horse. Did we knock another one off of the counter? Not yet. When it comes to your turn. When it comes around to you, knock the number down. Now that was turn or rounds. Oh, if it's turns, I'm dead. No, it's rounds. Well, if it's rounds, I'm not even gonna get there to help. We'll see. Yomar, it is the second round after the avalanche has settled. What are you doing?
SPEAKER_04Continue dig, looking for survivors. I was in wagon six. Okay. I looked at wagon one, that was his, so I'm moving on from there to whatever one's closest in the jumble of wagons. So is the intent to search for people?
SPEAKER_03Like are you probing with a spear jumping into the snow? Chopping it away with the axe. I'm making red snow. When it comes out red, you found somebody that's weird. How'd that get there? All right. So you're searching around that wagon.
SPEAKER_01Aren't all the wagons on top of each other?
SPEAKER_03A bunch of them are. They're very much clumped together. So there's actually a pretty good chance that there are people like in between those. There's probably cavity of some sort in that area. People might be alive there. So, Drek. Yes. What are you doing? Me and my 10-foot pole are going back to the avalanche, and we're going to look for survivors. Okay, just give me a somebody's sure of himself. Wisdom check. Wisdom? Beat a DC 12. Maybe I'm just standing there staring at it, hoping people will free themselves. You're using your 10-foot pole and you're probing in the snow. Alright, I run the natural one. Okay. All right. I'm telling you I wasn't doing anything good. And your pole is now a six-foot pole. Stabbing his own. You're probing into the snow and you lose. And you're pretty sure you just hit someone in the face. Yeah, but did they scream? You heard something. That would be what he's trying to do. Oh, hey, they wouldn't really hear it. Well, if you made the hole in the snow, the sound could travel out the hole. Maybe. So I'm not sure. The bloodied end of his ten-foot pole. It's probably just the minor bloodiness. Yeah. I mean, honestly. Look. I mean, it's not like dripping off of it, but think about it. Spear was a good idea. Whoever I hit, their alternative was suffocating and dying. Right. So now they got an arrow. He didn't say it. But they're not really saying anything. They just screamed because they got hit in the face with a bowl. Ungrateful, Brick. Stuff in a hole back there. Nobody ever hears.
SPEAKER_04They're jumping on that spot.
SPEAKER_03So you continue to struggle. Me too. And for love of God, I can never remember Eric's character. Glam! Glam.
SPEAKER_01Is the snow evil by any chance?
SPEAKER_03It is not fine. You think I can read that from you? I don't know. No, I can actually. Oh, okay. Well, you can I need to read it too. I have fairly decent eyesight at this point. At a distance. That's fair. Right here, I'm fucked that's why I don't paint miniatures anymore.
SPEAKER_02Eric.
SPEAKER_03Glem. Glem. Take your number down one. I did. Thank you. Serial. Trying to see if we can get the horses free. Okay. Some way to get out of here then. So you are just digging? So give me a strength check. DC twelve. I believe in you. We can eat the horses, man. Yeah, you can. Or ride.
SPEAKER_01Help keep the wagon going. If we get out, we're still screwed. If we don't have the horses.
SPEAKER_03What wagons are we going to keep going? We're screwed. I love his dedication to the job.
SPEAKER_01What'd you roll? Oh. He's eating his chocolate. He's eating his luck token.
SPEAKER_03For those of you who can't see what just happened.
SPEAKER_01He just ate the whole freaking thing.
SPEAKER_03Cereal. Rolled, what was it, a nine? Six. Six. And then whatever. We have given out luck tokens, which are chocolate coins. So he ate his chocolate coin, including the paper, I think. Metal foil. Oh, he put the whole thing in his mouth with the metal foil still on it. And then rolled a natural 20. So he manages to dig out one of the horses, which seems to be intact. No broken legs, etc. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Intact horse.
SPEAKER_03So you dig it out enough, it's able to struggle free, and it is now out and usable if you choose to use it to ride whatever you want to do. So you've got its reins, it's out. You've freed a horse. So we'll go back to the NPCs. Stig ear is struggling up the slope towards the mystery wagon, and still no sign of Halvard. Dagny has struggled free. And he is making his way towards the mystery wagon as well. She. Dagney's a she, yeah. Oh, not my world. Look, I can always I got the name right out of the book. Yeah? That's his online handle. Don't say that. Oh, that's right, though. Yeah, he did say that last time. Yeah, I did. Yeah, you are. It's already out there. It's already whatever. It's your world. Daphne can be a she or a he. It's the only reason I remember the name, to be frank. It could be. Either one. What are you doing?
SPEAKER_04I am continuing to dig in the snow. Yeah. A distant bell. I was gonna say, what was that?
SPEAKER_03Who knows? Things are still moving. My horse has sleigh bells.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I'm gonna try for a horse. See if I can find a horse. Yep. All right.
SPEAKER_03Clydesdales. That's what we need right now. Yeah. There's a few that you can see somewhat buried. All right.
SPEAKER_01I can hear this. They're also horses.
SPEAKER_04No people.
SPEAKER_03Not the people. Don't worry about uh good. That one arm sticking out of the snow slightly down slope. Those horses.
SPEAKER_01Make sure the horses live.
SPEAKER_04That's all we already established. Horses leave all men behind.
SPEAKER_03And there's a there's a boot. Off off to the one side, there's a boot sticking out. I need it, I need to ride. And you pull on it, and it's yeah, we're gonna need at least five horse.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so I'm counting here.
SPEAKER_03We can only hope. All right, so you're digging out a horse. Yeah, I figure a horse can pull a wagon out. Roll strength check, DC twelve. Alright. Well, yeah, that's a lot. 22. Okay, yeah. You also find a horse that is largely unencumbered, manage to free it. Well, this one is attached to a wagon, so you have to cut straps and stuff to get it free. Or you can have it try to pull the wagon free. That's what I was intending to do. Okay. To do that, you're gonna take there there'll be some more digging before you'll be able to pull it out, but you've freed the horse to the point where it can help you pull.
SPEAKER_04That's what the goal was, because maybe there's somebody in the wagon beside the wagon.
SPEAKER_03You don't have to convince me. I just wanted to at least make it look good. No, I actually think that's a good idea. This is called rationalization. Somebody was definitely in the wagon at one point. At some point. Right. We don't know which wagon that is. They didn't come with numbers on the screen. Or maybe it had money in it.
SPEAKER_01They laugh at me, but that's a good idea when he does it.
SPEAKER_03They did show numbers. Dragons. It is your turn. What are you doing, Dragon? So how far down was the person who who yelped when I accidentally poked them? Probably about eight feet. Eight feet? Damn, I really had that pole in there. You did. You gave it a good shot. You sunk it. That was like wrist deep. I widened, I widened the space out so like, you know, that the person can breathe. Hey, who's that? Hello? Down there. You killed them. It's Halvard. Did anybody notice me? Did anybody notice Halvard me finding him? I look around and see if anybody was seeing me. We got one guy doing horses, stick ears going that way. It does not appear that anyone has noticed. Alright. We'll be back. Hang tight. You're way far down. We're gonna have to get some horses to get you out. Just stay very calm, okay? Alright. Are you crushed? Are you injured? Yes, my eyes bloody. Besides that, arms, broken legs. I can't move. I can't tell. Everything hurts. Are you cold? Of course I'm fucking cold.
SPEAKER_04I think if you urinate it will warm him up.
SPEAKER_03And then I'm buried in snow, dumbass. Just push the snow over the hole again. Was there any whiskey in the wagons? This might be a bad time to bring this up, but we're behind schedule. Remind him what day it is. Just so you know, we got a lot of people to get out. Only two wagons made it through. Get me out of here and I'll pay you double. Well, we could do this two ways. We could do, and I get closer to the hole so nobody could hear. I'm like, we could do double, I'll make a argument of double for everyone, or you could do triple for me. Alright, let's see. Why are you rolling? He's gonna take that deal. Right, but I get more. No, I know. But why yeah, yeah, double for the rest.
SPEAKER_04That's more that he's gonna be able to do that.
SPEAKER_03Well, I'm figuring that trapped in an avalanche, he's not really thinking clearly. Just kind of whatever comes out of his math is probably not his strong suit right now. If it ever was. Fair. Right. And I rolled I rolled a natural one. Okay. So I'm gonna go with he just reflexively says, double for everyone. Just get me out. Yeah. Sure. I'll be back. I go look for other people. I mean, when we die, you can probably have our share. I do leave it open though. He's gonna say that he doesn't have to pay you if you die. So I gotta make sure your ass lives so we can get you paid. Well, speaking of which, take another number off your die. What are we down to? Well, that puts me at zero now. Okay. So you struggle to the point where you are seeing daylight. You're not out, but you're seeing daylight. Is my beard above the level of the snow? No. In fact, it pretty much is snow. It's cake in there. You've got that snot ice. Right, snotzicles. Yeah, yeah, snotticles for sure. But you are you're at the point where you can probably dig your way out next turn. You'll be out. You'll free yourself. Okay. Can I bellow? Absolutely. Oh, I'm gonna bellow away. Get me the fuck out of here. I look around.
SPEAKER_01Where's Hovart?
SPEAKER_03You're buried. I'm gonna kill him. Nobody can see him because he's still below the level of the snow, right? Yeah, he's nowhere. We just hear him grumping. Oh yeah, yeah. I'm just being rhetorical. Well, you probably see if you're at a distance, what you see is snow puffing up, the occasional top of a helmet or something. Right. Flailing, right? So let's move to Glem. Take one off your number. Take one off, down to one. Okay. And cereal. You have the freed horse. Trying to work on my other horse. Okay, so you're going after the other horse on this wagon. Give me a strength check.
SPEAKER_01Again?
SPEAKER_03Well, yeah, you're digging. And you're half-linking. A 19. This half length. Is that half-link stronger than all you?
So I get a weak bladder.
SPEAKER_03You see, mountain snow, regular name. Stig here is almost to the mystery wagon at this point. He's trudging through the snow, kind of climbing on all fours up out of it. Still haven't found Halvard that you know of. Well, one of us. That most of you know of. Dagney is coming over to help free people. Looking for uh actually he's heading towards where you think you heard the dwarf bellow. And that's about all you see at this point from the other members. And it's still snowing, of course. It is still snowing. It's a steady, like small snow, the kind that those of us that live in snowy areas know is going to keep going for a while. And it's windy or no? There is wind, but it's not like knock you over. Right. It's not a blizzard, it's just I'm in a mountain pass on any given day kind of wind. It's that silent blanket. Okay. Yeah. Yalmar?
SPEAKER_04I'm going to dig out the second horse and try to do the same thing Mr. Halfling's doing.
SPEAKER_03Alright, let's see if you can. Can I see these two assholes digging horses? No, you're still under the snow. We don't see you. You're in like a cone of snow. Nobody can see you actually with a cone on its neck. What you're doing is you're digging yourself out, but you're noticing that there's like rocks in front of you, but it's a smooth surface, which is very weird. But we'll get to that. You just concentrate on that. 16. Okay, you again manage to maneuver things. The horse is struggling for you, it'll be out next turn. Dreck. Anybody seen Clem? Glem! Glen! Not his brother Clem. Glem.
unknownNo?
SPEAKER_03Dagny shakes his head no. Stigger just ignores you. Yeah, you guys have fed Glem to the groom. Oh yeah, that's who Clem was. We left him there. That's true. Glam! I start poking around again. Glam, which alright, so are there any parts so we know everybody had a wagon. We got two wagons out. There's six wagons. Well, six wagons in. So there's four wagons around here that are they're parts of six wagons in the avalanche. Right. Two are visible and out and moving, right? Well the wagons aren't, but some of the horses are. My point is he wasn't with those. I know he was on a different wagon, right? Because these guys would have been with those wagons. So that leads me to four. But he's over there, so that would have been three. So now I have there are three wagons visible, like in the avalanche, bits or pieces of them sticking up.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03All right. So I go to the wagons to start my search for the next person.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_03So I go to wagon number two. Whichever. So the second one I see.
SPEAKER_02Which wagon were you on? He doesn't.
SPEAKER_03No, this is not a literal number two. Of the three wagons remaining, this is the middle to the middle one. Give me an intelligence check. DC twelve. It's snowing today, boys. That's a three. So you go to a wagon and you're digging around trying to find people. Yep. And Glem! Glam! You find a body that is not Glem. Alright, which of my drivers is this? Well, it was wagon when you were on three? It was wagon number three's driver. Is she dead? She's dead. Poor Astrid. You were my favorite. I rode with you many days. We were gonna make lovely babies together. It is very unfortunate. May the gods take your soul, except for Gade, because we haven't found the priest. So if we do, I'll let him do this. He's much better at it. I think he's blathering because of hypothermia. Okay. That's my action. That was weird. Hypothermia will make you do strange things. Alright. We're not to the point where we're gonna be making constitution checks for hypothermia, but we're not far off. So I wasn't in an avalanche. I don't have to be you are now. Rumble. Rubble rubble. So you're struggling free, right? And you're trying, you're climbing out, and for whatever reason, what you're climbing on seems to be like worked stone that is smooth, like maybe a pyramid type shape. And you're like pushing yourself up to get above the level of snow, and you're like, wait a second, what am I on? And you look down, you see a stone kind of cairn would be the best way, but it is very well crafted, and there are dwarven designs and the work of my people. Definitely. And there is seems to be some writing down below, but you'd probably have to dig for a while to be able to see it all. I'm not as intellectually curious as I would normally be at this point.
SPEAKER_02Sure.
SPEAKER_03I'm angry and cold. Pissed off and cold. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And I just want to punch any sort of member of leadership of this caravan. Can I see around? Other than this, can I see around and see people?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you see the only leadership you see is Stigir, and he is a fair distance away. And Dreck approaching leadership, right? I feel marginalized. Dreck took leadership approaching. Drex took leadership. He's union leadership. Right. He's not company leadership. He's not management.
SPEAKER_01He's not management.
SPEAKER_03So he's he didn't call for a halt in the caravan at lunchtime. So Stigir is out of the avalanche, and he is approaching the back of the mystery wagon. Alright. Do I have my shield and or axe or is are they gone? No, you have all of your possessions. Okay. Alright. Can I get completely out of the snow? You can. And that rock, is that still exposed? That's the same thing. The peak of it is in the hole you created by leaving the snow. Okay. So I know where that's at. Should be easy to find, yeah. Alright.
SPEAKER_01Until I'm gonna like plunk the half of my axe into the snow near that point. Okay. And I'm going to turn around and I'm just going to start stalking towards Stigir.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_01Alright.
SPEAKER_03Glem. I'm at zero. Alright, so at zero, you manage to clog your way to the point where you can see sunlight. Yay. You can breathe. Van Gade. There is sunlight there. Next turn you'll be able to free yourself.
SPEAKER_01I'm actually thinking I'm dead at this point. Not sure if I'm alive.
SPEAKER_03It does look very kind of dead-ish.
SPEAKER_01Oh sort of light comes in.
SPEAKER_03You're walking towards the white light. Yeah, you've rebirthed.
SPEAKER_01Man, is he gonna be disappointed enough?
SPEAKER_03Waiting to be taken to the whatever. Yes. The Ethereal Beyond Serial.
SPEAKER_01All right. With the help of my wagon driver, I'm gonna get them to try to help get the wagon dislodged.
SPEAKER_03I think there was a squirrel under there you can rescue. So now that everyone in the party is freed, and there is no real risk of like somebody dying from the avalanche that is a player character, I'm gonna go out of turn order and just go into free associate. Adventuring rounds narrative mode. Okay. So you manage to get everyone in the party out of the avalanche. You're you're heading towards Stigier. And we might be going right back into an initiative order. So this is just what I'm saying. What's your intent? To punch him in the freaking face. Okay. By the time you reach the wagon, he's inside it and the door is closed. Well, a plus two. To strength does give you advantage in opening doors, checks. Okay. So that's what you're going for? Yep. All right. Go ahead and run. I'm gonna freaking rip the this door off of its freaking hinges.
SPEAKER_01Is that iron wood?
SPEAKER_03No, I'm not. Well, you have advantage. You said something about advantage.
SPEAKER_01Eat the chocolate.
SPEAKER_03Is that your advantage? He is consuming a chocolate coin, which is our version of Luck Tokens, to get a re-roll on his strength check. How long have you had these?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I was gonna say. Don't worry about that. They're fine. No, it's fine.
SPEAKER_03They are inside the expiration date on the packaging.
SPEAKER_01Even though he keeps refilling the package.
SPEAKER_03It's a ripped open plastic bag, dude. That'll be a 15. Alright. So you manage to break the lock on the door and you open it. Darkness inside. Or at least it seems to be since you've been out in the bright snow and the walls of this thing are canvas. No, this is wood. Oh, it's a hard top, yes. And it's completely dark inside. It is very dark inside. Dark enough that going from the snow and opening the door, you're having trouble seeing anything inside. Well, then I'm just gonna go full aggro.
SPEAKER_01I'm just gonna reach in. I'm gonna walk in, reach in.
SPEAKER_03Whatever I can like get my arm towards, I'm just gonna sweep the arm and just whatever. Alright. Whatever. He's going to be a big one. I'm an angry dwarf right now. Alright. Is angry is angry. Alright. I have not taken any weapons out. Okay. Um let me just hold on.
SPEAKER_01Let me just roll right up to initiative this. He didn't decide what was in the wagon yet.
SPEAKER_03I'm making something happen. We weren't supposed to go in the wagon. All right, wait, two or three more days. You broke open the door, you step into the darkness, and just right hand just sweep just whatever, just bottles, which would have been already on the floor. You feel you feel some things slide off of shelves and crash to the floor. Yep. Like you're breaking them like they were maybe held in place with a rope. You're like ripping the whole thing down. Yeah. And you hear shattering. You hear a curse.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I'm hearing some from myself as well.
SPEAKER_03I'm sure you are. You also hear what kind of sounds like a piece of wood, like a staff or something hitting the floor. Okay. Like it like a mage like Gandalf smacking his thing. You shall not pass. I'm not gonna pass. And uh in a pass, you can we'll leave it there. Okay. No, that's fine. So, Glem, what are you doing?
SPEAKER_01I don't know. I just got out of the hole. I'm wandering around. I am looking for anyone who needs assistance.
SPEAKER_03Okay, looking for injured injured people that I can help. So of the people, who is you're pretty injured, right? I'm very injured. I'm I have six out of fourteen hit points. And you took that from the avalanche. I took or some from the bear. Right. I took four of it from the avalanche, a bunch from the bear. No, not from the bear. I took from the cat the day before. So you don't see the dwarf, you see a bit of a small blood trail from a hole that goes to the covered wagon, the secret wagon, the door is slightly like off its hinges and open, and you can see movement. Let's face it, you can hear him too. In the darkness.
unknownAnd you can hear him.
SPEAKER_03Hear some very loud dwarvish grunting and cursing. Dwarvish curses. You also see these two, meaning cereal and Yalmar. And they're a team of horses. Digging out horses, but Yalmar is bleeding. There's, I mean, it's like he's got wounds. Every time he digs, some blood comes out. Not like arterial, but he's moving and it's happening. So he probably needs your attention more than anyone who can see. Were you hurt from the snow from the snow? You got hit by the bear. He got hurt by the bear first. And nobody bothered to heal him after the bear fight. Yeah, we've got things. If you don't ask except for healing. Well, we had to have our visit for the local. So we didn't heal naturally. Right. We wouldn't want that up. Because we didn't meet a member of the animal family that evening. Blame this.
SPEAKER_01See, I thought that's what was weird. Well, we met one every evening. Blame the D6. So I'm going to heal the arterial flow that's happening over here.
SPEAKER_03Maybe. Sean doesn't believe it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. 18. All right.
SPEAKER_03So you successfully cast your spell?
SPEAKER_01I do. And let's see. It's a d6. Six is equal to one plus half your level rounded down. So is that a one or a two? That's one.
SPEAKER_03To the square root of pi? Yeah. It'd be one, right? You're level two. A squared plus b squared equals c squared. That's not pi, that's Pythagorean theorem. I am aware. Two. Pythagorean theorem. You're healed. The one piece of algebra I still use. Two points. Three. He's healed. Three points. Don't you get a plus one? Why would I get a plus one? Because you said you did. Yeah, you did literally said that in the equation. If someone says if you have a plus one, you say yes. Yes, I have a plus one. All right. So you get three points back. What it's two. So the bleeding is stopped at least. I'm almost full power. All right. Serial. Well. Oh. What do you do? That's you, Joey.
SPEAKER_01Still working on my wagon. Trying to get my wagon free.
SPEAKER_03So that's right. You're digging the actual wagon out.
SPEAKER_01Well, we're using the horses with the wagon driver to pull the wagon out of the.
SPEAKER_03You're still working on that, so we'll just leave you to that. Let it never be said that he's not focused. Right. You're gonna sit here with my wound. To his own and others' detriments. Well, one thing's for sure. He ain't walking to Miro's rest. Okay. So it comes back around to the NPCs. And they die. Thrall, you see they all die. Movement at your feet as many small snakes slither past you and out the door. Okay. Oh, cool. All right. You also see as your eyes begin to adjust, you see Stigir is in there. He's like kind of half sitting, half leaning onto what is a hammock bed sort of arrangement. Okay. There is a small stove in the corner with a chimney. It is lit, it's burning. It's actually not horribly cold in here. There are glass containers broken on the floor. Some from what you did, some from the surge forward when the wagon fled. Right, yeah. But at your feet when it was being driven recklessly by Right. At your feet you see a pool of what looks like an oily substance surrounded by broken glass, and in the middle you see a piece of I don't know, jewelry? It is a holy symbol of the god Ord. You've seen it before. Okay. It is large, ornate, and has a faint glow. Okay. And is there any other figures in here other than Stigir? He's the only one you see. Okay. Well, he's the only one I came here for. And he's like, what are you doing? I'm grabbing him by the frickin' brooch of his cloak and try to drag him out of the Well, he recognizes your intent because you're not subtle. So rolled a hit. No, subtlety is not what I'm going for. Rolled a hit. Okay. Oh. Fully beautiful. Absolutely. Not 20. Beautiful. Alright, so you have got him. What was the goal? Are you like grabbing him by the collar and picking him up? Or what was the I'm dragging him out of the wagon and I'm beating the crap out of him. So you've got him by the segment A of the plan. Okay. Drag out. You have successfully grabbed him by like the back of the collar, changed his balance point so he is in a dragging position. So you can easily just march out with him behind you. Right. Is that the plan? Yeah. Dragging him out? Okay. So you have dragged him down the step or two. I'm not operating in the realm of anything other than pure rage. You're going like Dustin Bufflin. Right. Yeah. I'm just things need to change. Yeah. So I'm changing things. Come here, petulant child. Whatever that ends up to be. All right. You've dragged the different. Having a change in leadership. You can see small tracks in the snow where the snakes all moved as a group. I ain't getting far. Disappeared. Yeah, they're cold-blooded. That's not going to work out for them. They're frozen. Which way is east in the path oriented? As you're traveling down the road, it would be your left. Okay. Sorry, chair. Yeah, I was kept hearing it. I was like, I didn't know what it was because you're not moving right now. Those are the sounds of the wagon's springs. Yeah, yeah. As he's dragging him down the steps. Yeah, they're probably horrible leaf springs. Yeah. If they're even springs at all, they're probably just bowed metal. Yeah. Like a yeah, it's a leaf spring. Okay.
SPEAKER_04Yes. Yalmar. I am have two horses freed. We are going to attempt to pull the wagon out of the snow. Okay.
SPEAKER_03Give me a you and the horses?
SPEAKER_04Me and the horses.
SPEAKER_03All right. Give me a strength check. Hell yeah. DC-12. Nah, I didn't do anything. Okay. It's icy two. You just lodge the wagon.
SPEAKER_01You guys are judging the.
SPEAKER_03But as it's rolling forward, you hear a scream. Oh shit. We killed somebody. You rolled it over somebody. And then it rolls back into place. Like when you're trying to get your car out, there's that divot, right? It rolls up. You hear the scream and then it settles back in as the horse is kind of. I think that means means we need to try again. Your car runs over a body. Exactly.
SPEAKER_04I think we need to try again.
SPEAKER_01Come on, put your back to the horses.
SPEAKER_03A little bit more. I'm going to somebody's back anyway. Alright, so Drek, what now? Hey Glem, can you come here for a minute? I go back over the Halvert hole.
SPEAKER_01The Halvert hole. Yeah. Come here. Do I have to wait my turn?
SPEAKER_03No, I'm not sure.
SPEAKER_01I can respond.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Come here. I can. I'm coming. Slowly. We need to edit that one out. 35 minutes we got. That's where we edit Eric said. I'm heading over your way. Oh my god. Halvard here is down in this hole. You see him down there? You found Halvard. I found Halvard. Halvard offered us triple wages, but I want you to witness it so that way he can't double cross me. He can't double cross a priest, right? So Hogvard, remember when you said you were paying us all triple for rescuing you out of this avalanche, right? I just What? Glem is here. I need you to tell him how you're paying us triple now. I might be ruining your negotiating position. What? He doesn't know that. It's two separate occurrences. You're saying what? I said you get me out of here and I'll pay you all double. I heard triple. Fine! Triple. Get me out of here. Oh. All right. Go for quadruple.
SPEAKER_01This is sealed by Gade. Is this triple for everyone?
SPEAKER_03Alright. Witnessed by a priest. Alright, I start digging against my own better judgment. Okay. Strength tech. Let's go with three. That ain't it. Right. I knew it wasn't it. I don't need you to give me a number. I'll tell you. You dig. Snow moves. No appreciable progress is made. Whoops. It's getting very far. You're pretty deep. It's icy. All right. So uh and you're just shoveling snow into the grumpy dwarf drag guy. What now? I'm looking at it. What's his expression on his face telling me? Is there any fear? Is it any is there any uh is he angry? Uh just my basic two-second read of the. I'm gonna go with all of the above. Okay. He's given the circumstances, it's what can be expected. Confused, angry, frustrated. Okay, I got some of that going on too. Yeah. I can appreciate it. Wondering why he's being dragged out of a wagon. Well, I'm wondering why he went to the wagon when we're all here.
SPEAKER_01What's this trip about still here? What's Holvard got us doing?
SPEAKER_03Escorting a caravan. Yeah, who's in the wagon? There's nobody in the wagon. You were in there too. What's with the snakes? What snakes? You saw the snakes. I saw an angry dwarf breaking a door. He didn't know you were in a wagon with snakes. There was no snakes in that wagon. My first plan was better. And I and I wind up for the assault, but I'm not swinging. Okay. Unless he says something you disagree with. He's at this point, he's still in a position where he can't really offer much resistance? Or did you let him stand up? No, he's he's in the grasp. Okay. So you've got him like facing the other way. Right. Hockey fight style. Yeah. You got the jersey. Pull his tarp over his head. Yeah. Okay. Is that you're waiting for him to speak? I'm just watching him. He's just waiting. Just like I think he needs punched. Whatever. Alright. I missed. Alright. And he like flinches and we'll call that the end of your turn. Okay. Glem. I helped dig.
SPEAKER_01So the where the what's the guy's name?
SPEAKER_03Halvard?
SPEAKER_01Halvard, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Give me a strength check.
SPEAKER_01Yep, I'm super strengthening. Three.
SPEAKER_03You and I both rolled the snow. So you both are digging and throwing the snow into the hole the other one is creating. Progress. So you're you succeed in moving some snow, but no one makes any progress. Serial. What now?
SPEAKER_01Well, my wagon is still stuck, apparently. So we're using the horses to try to free it. Get the wagon out of the way, because another wagon slammed into us when the avalanche was happening and we bottlenecked. So if I get this stuff out of the way, it might clear a path. I could eat it for other people.
SPEAKER_03Alright. Give me strength check. Intelligence?
SPEAKER_01See if I'm smart enough to do it.
SPEAKER_03So you're trying to like smart your way out of this? Sure. Alright. Give me an intelligence check. Finding a better path. That's fine.
SPEAKER_01I couldn't wisdom my way out. 14. Okay.
SPEAKER_03Could have used any one of your stats and probably would have succeeded. Yeah, you managed to free the wagons. Everything else is zero or using your complex knowledge of being triangulation. Of being short and knowing how to climb things.
SPEAKER_01Little people power.
SPEAKER_03Little people power. Because of your perspective, you know where the holes are. We'll just leave it. Yeah, he does.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he does. What was that expression? He found me out.
SPEAKER_03Alright, so you managed to pull the wagon. So now the wagon is sitting in the cavity. You created by removing the horses, basically. But it is mobile. Anything else? No. Anyone else need help? Kelmar.
SPEAKER_04Do I know where the scream came from? Was it back right, back left? What kind of general orientation?
SPEAKER_03I would say you can guesstimate it was in front of the rear left wheel.
SPEAKER_04I will attempt to dig down there with yeah, I won't use my axe to dig. Maybe not. Yeah. Probably make a decent shovel.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I think it would. I mean, except for that point on the end. Yeah, I'm gonna use my hands. We all know about that shit. Or heads. Yeah. If it comes out red, we know we're there. That's it. Yeah, I'll dig the back out.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_03Strength check. Just random. 16? Okay. So you dig down, you manage to unearth another one of the drivers. What wagon were you on? I have no idea. You were on six.
SPEAKER_04I was on six, but I got off to fight the snow.
SPEAKER_03We'll say it was we'll say it was six. Ingolf. Okay, so you unearth ingolf. He seems to be pretty badly injured. Sorry. Whether it was from the avalanche or from the wagon rolling over him, it's difficult to say. We'll definitely blame the avalanche. I assign no blame to you. That's the avalanche's fault. He wouldn't have been in that position. There's a fair amount of blood. Glad we have a cleric. Like in the snow. But the wagon itself should now be fairly easy to free. Let's see. I slack the horses and it'll roll out. Drek. Alright. I guess we're still digging our way to Halvard. You still all right down there, Halvard? How's your toes? Cold? I can't feel them. Alright, what about your fingers? I can't move. Can you feel your fingers? No. Alright. How far did we make it down here? No. No, with those rolls? The snow is the same level as T Burstard. It's now ten feet down instead of eight. You've effectively packed the snow beneath you. Maybe we should just let it go out.
SPEAKER_04I wouldn't waste the effort anymore.
SPEAKER_03I'm gonna I'm gonna make I I got a promise out of a man to give me triple what I was sold initially, which still feels like I'm being underpaid. And you're still being paid by the day. Eight. Now I'm in no rush, though. Trying. Eight. I mean, you've cleared some snow away, but well, he might freeze to death before we get down there, Clint Glem. Yeah, he might. He will be a pretty common danger with Avalanche rescue. I heard I heard all over there. I heard him yelling about somebody under a wagon. You could dig here or you could go help the wounded.
SPEAKER_01I can dig here. He has the money.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, well, all right. Since we're digging together, he does have the money. Eleven. One of us will succeed eventually. You seem to make a bit more progress than him, but it's slow going. This area seems to be very densely packed. It's tough snow. All is not gonna live to be punched in the face by a dwarf. Very heavy snow. I'm feeling maybe we could just warm him up the old-fashioned way. What, piss in the hole? That's deal. That's old fashioned, all right. I got some oil. We could throw fire. So he did nothing. Right. And that's taking the wind out of my sails a little bit because I was hoping for some some resistance so I can get some aggravation out. So I'm just gonna throw them. Okay, throwing them into the snow somewhere or into into the snow, and then I'm just a wagon. Walking back towards the scene of the carnage. Okay. So uh at this point, we've gotten people out. Halvard is pretty well buried. Is the intent to try to unearth Halvard just as a group? What are we doing? Trying to get the horses out. My vote would be no on the Halvard thing. Yeah, I'm okay. Well, you know, uh I'd just like to point out that Halvard offered us triple. So you've effectively got four wagons that are mobile. I don't think I'll be able to afford it though. Not that we were ever getting paid anyway. We're all gonna try. Well triple zero is still zero.
SPEAKER_01But it's triple.
SPEAKER_03Right, but it's three times as much. Of nothing. We're never getting paid. How are we getting wages? We're never getting off of this thing unless we live by ourselves.
SPEAKER_01We're not delivering this crap. Half of it's under the snow. It's all buried, it's mostly gone. Most of these wagons aren't gonna make it. How are we going to get all of this to Miro's rest?
SPEAKER_03This caravan is an ex-caravan. Four wagons is still a caravan. Using a lot of big words there. A lot of concepts I don't understand. Ex-caravan? One of the wagons has nothing in it but some glass beakers and some snakes that have run off. Snakes. Splithered off. In the snow. In the snow. In a blizzard. So they're magic.
SPEAKER_01What did they look like?
SPEAKER_03Snakes. They looked like snakes. They all look alike to dwarves. They were jet black. They were black snakes.
SPEAKER_01How large?
SPEAKER_03If there were any rats around, they would probably eat them. Big black snakes. They were fairly, I mean, not gonna live. Probably four feet die. Between like two and four feet sizable snakes. But there's a lot of them.
SPEAKER_01Thralls hallucinating hyperthermia.
SPEAKER_03Believe me. So I opened up that that wagon, and what was in it was Stig ear and some snakes. So it's not a bunch of prophets. Well, there was more than that. Is that Halvert talking from the bottom? And a and a and a no, this is the GM. Okay. A deity symbol from Ord. Who's that? I mean, I know Ord the deity. I mean, we'd have to we'd have to ask our Bible thumper.
SPEAKER_01I don't know. Who's Ord? Fill me with knowledge of Ord.
SPEAKER_03I mean, you would know who Ord is, but I would probably recognize. But the player does not. Right. Which means he needs told.
SPEAKER_01I'm Ord. Ord is a snake god.
SPEAKER_03No, he's not.
SPEAKER_01Oh, Ord is a
SPEAKER_03He is now. He is now always the snake god.
SPEAKER_01I'm just thinking of Conan now.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, we were talking about Conan. So are we leaving of Set. Set. Right. In the lands far to the south. Where they worship Set. Let's see. Ord. Why would they be taking snakes to the side? Or the Unbending, the wise, the secret keeper. He is the god of magic, knowledge, secrets, and equilibrium. So they were magic snakes. Yep. Snake, magic snakes of knowledge.
SPEAKER_01That we were delivering to a village.
SPEAKER_03They were being smuggled. Smuggling snakes. You also know that Ord is forever locked in a battle with Shun and her worshippers. Snakes on a wagon train. Shun whispers arcane secrets, sorcerers, and witches who call to her in the dark hours. She schemes to displace Ord so she can control the vast flow of magic herself. Do we have to get in the middle of this? They forever go back and forth. I think. Yeah, I think we're in the middle of it right now. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01We got four wagons freed. We can turn around and go back.
SPEAKER_03No, we can't. So some other things that we've come across that seem to have fallen by the wayside. You have the cairn that you unearthed. I'm getting to that, but there's I'm working through some rage right now. I get it. I get it. There's the buried caravan master. There's Stigir. The wagon full of whatever it is, the holy symbol. Darkness. And essentially four wagons that are still sewed under. The thing that strikes you as odd is that the way it's laying there and broken, it looks like it was in a glass vessel full of some sort of oil. Although the holy symbol. Okay. Alright. Also, the snakes might have come out of the bottle, maybe. I don't know. Well, uh, you don't know. Right. Not your area of expertise, certainly. It's magic. I may have inadvertently loosed some snake demons upon the world. Well, some other adventure. A little.
SPEAKER_04Listen, listen, don't I was we've all had bad days.
SPEAKER_03A little bit of demons. A little bit of demons.
SPEAKER_04It's okay. I'm sure this isn't a problem we can solve.
SPEAKER_03So what approach are we taking to that problem solving? I'm not sure what the solution that we're looking for.
SPEAKER_01So it is now probably uh do we want to save at least one person that we can yet?
SPEAKER_03Or are we just giving us this is dragging on. This is not a fast process. So the day is progressing. Right. You're now probably at the warmest part of the day. But it is still very dark and it is snowing. So do we continue digging out the wagons or do we just give up? We're not going anywhere today. So the Stigger is building a fire. Probably if people were going to suffocate in the avalanche, they would have done it by now. Unfortunately, more than likely. It's a terrible thing to say. Right. But we probably aren't going to be rescuing live people at this point. Okay. And did we ever were we ever able with our digging to ever actually get Halvard out? I mean, I don't know. If you intend to keep digging and trying, you probably will eventually. He might be frostbitten. He won't suffocate, but he's going to need some amputation. Who knows what the effects of the avalanche were on him? And who knows what the effects of the cold will be by the time you get there. We'll have to find that out when you get there. Or are we going to try to? If you get there. Look, uh I know he's making a tough call. So at this point, what you have is the drivers you've unearthed are helping you try to unearth other people. Well, Halvard was our leader. He was the captain. A bad leader he was. But he was one. Stigger has built a fairly large fire just off the side of the path and is warming himself by it. He's not particularly worried about Halvard, is he? Well, the people that are digging for Halvard are not the people he thinks are going to be horribly friendly to him because you've you certainly expressed your displeasure. Okay. So I okay. All right. Right. So he's not going to come, hey guys, let me get in here, elbow to elbow and help. He's what can I do that doesn't put me right next to those people? Okay. Then it worked. Fair enough. I'm still digging. Okay, so the intent is to get him out. Yeah, but I also think that we should make an effort to save what we can out of the other wagons, pull out some extra meads, rations. Even though you're digging you are cold. And you're getting sweaty from digging. But I did roll a 19 for my next dig attempt. Wait, I just realized. Uh-oh, what? The mead is under there. It is. Actually, we have four wagons that are currently free and four that are unaccounted for. So let me make a roll. 50-50. We'll see. We got provisions. The mead wagon is one of the ones that survived. What about the food wagon? It could determine the fate of the expedition. Food. So everybody gets to see this one because it's an important one. I think we should see all of them. One to five. The mead wagon did not make it out yet. Okay. So one of the wagons you pulled free was full of the casks of mead. It was probably the one he was so careful with and some other provisions. So don't worry about what you want to pull one of the cook wagons out. So you have like some cooking utensils, you have food, you have mead, but the temperature seems to still be dropping. Well, let's make an effort to Did I get Halvard out or you will eventually get Halvard out? But will I hurt myself before then? Because if it comes down to me hurting myself or recovering Halvard, I'll just push the snow back in the hole. You're thinking it's probably it's so cold if you don't build a fire here. Alright, so I'm done. I go back to the fire and say, hey, Stigier, you go dig. We need him. Then go dig. I'm gonna freeze. He goes back and starts digging. Okay, and I'm gonna I'm gonna dig around the spot where I came out. Okay. I'm gonna tell everybody it's because I'm looking for the wagon beneath, but I'm trying to excavate more around that stone thing that I thought. I'm gonna finally have a look at it.
unknownAll right.
SPEAKER_03Because I was just angry before. Just give me a strength check to see how far you get. Okay. That would be a modified 16. So you managed to unearth most of it. Okay. And it is there is dwarven writing on it, dwarven runes in a very old script. A little hard to translate, kind of like you and I reading old English. Right. And uh it speaks of a mercantile path and points to the east as the path you're following, meaning like this would be used as a navigational cairn.
SPEAKER_01Okay, does it say Miro's rest and an arrow going to No.
SPEAKER_03Okay. From the looks of this and the script and the dialect, it is far older than anything that would know about Miro's Rest. Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_01This is and which direction?
SPEAKER_03So pass is going north north. So it's pointing into what looks like a very large cut in the mountains.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_03There's a few miles worth of forest in the direction it's pointing.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_03You would think if this cairn probably was the intersection of a road, pointing you one direction along a path, and it indicates that you're uh heading towards you're not sure what it really means, but it sounds like Trade Depot. Well, if it's in Dwarven, it may be leading to Okay. It's a road sign. It is, effectively. But it's I I motioned a direct. The words it's using for what it's pointing you to are unfamiliar. Though you do remember hearing stories of an ancient network of tunnels that the dwarves used to trade through the mountains, shielded from the weather. I come over with a torch. Have a look at this. You see that? Do you speak dwarf and drak? No. So I thought I heard Seawolf, so I picked the Marin language as my second language, figuring maybe I'll run into some goddamn mermaids. I couldn't be further from a mermaid if I tried at this point. We're still dealing with the large amounts of the element. Which element? Water. Yes. Frozen, but water nonetheless. See any mermaids? Snow mermaids. That's not why I called you over here to talk about. So what you see in front of you is a very precisely carved cairn. This, my friend. Intricate is very interesting. I can't read all of the lettering. But this points to perhaps an ancient dwarf hold here in these mountains. There is a possibility that we may have a tunnel to find safety in not very far away. It points east, and I point over to where that cleft in the rock is. Is that it's describe it? I would call it a valley. Okay. So like a ravine or something like that. Yeah. This is directing me to an ancient dwarven site in that direction. What time of day is it right now? It is late afternoon. And you know how I feel about living underground in weather like this. That it's better than living in weather like this? Because it's a constant 56 degrees Fahrenheit. That's awful specific. It is. So what are you suggesting? That we pack up and move towards your cave potential, or are we gonna go scout it out and then tomorrow morning after we've un unlike froze ourselves? What's the plan? In the absence of that buffoon Halvard. Yeah. You are our union leader, so you are in charge of this expedition. Damn right. I'm just stating what I feel we may find if we head in that direction, because we're not going to get off this mountain any other way. So this is a chance to survive. And as your new leader, I'm gonna have to inform you that our our triple pay is only on the condition of Halbard paying you, not me.
SPEAKER_04So control change in leadership.
SPEAKER_03You realize that the direction it is pointing is the same direction the snakes went. Oh yeah. We realized that already. Also, also some snakes went that way. Are you afraid of snakes? No. Crazy. I'm not afraid of anything. It is also very strange to see snakes in an Arctic environment. Not gonna lie. Moving. Moving, yeah. I'm a little afraid of you right now. You're a little off the rails. You gotta stay cool, man, like me. Why? So that does it work for you? I think it's working. Going off the rails on a what? I think it's working. Crazy. Should we tell everybody else? All right, let's you and me plan. Are we gonna go there tomorrow or today? I would say we go there as soon as we can. To hell with everyone else?
SPEAKER_02Sleep over there.
SPEAKER_03Who else? You and me. Have no more of these. And our friends. And whoever we can round up from the everybody who's willing to go. Yes. Alright, that's fine. Let's try it. I'm in charge. Let's do it. What just happened? Drek is in charge of the caravan now. So he's proclaimed himself leader. And I have removed all responsibility from myself for this for whatever. Well, I just want to know how to know about the bonus situation.
unknownYeah. All right.
SPEAKER_03Producing a new cover sheet for the TPS report.
SPEAKER_01Forget about surviving. When I get paid.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_04Well, let's step one. So what's in this for me? Survival, maybe at this point.
SPEAKER_03So look, old here. This ancient dwarf ruin. What's the thune? Who's the goddess? Thrun? Soon? Shrul? Selene? What are you talking about? The one in the caravan. It's really bad for him to not know the title. The holy symbol was of the god Ord. Yeah, but wasn't there the Ord's opponent was Shun the Vine. Shun. That's what I was going for, right? Shun, right? Evil god of magics or something. They both are gods and goddesses of magic, and they're in a constant battle on who controls the power. Right. So one of they're both bad guys then, in my opinion.
SPEAKER_04That sounds a whole lot of from a mechanic standpoint.
SPEAKER_03You got Fizband, you got Riceland. Or it is neutral. There you go. And Shun is evil. Yeah, I knew Shun was evil, but all magic is bad. So let's look, here's our options. We stay out here. We're playing Conan now.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Magic, bad. And hope we don't freeze to death. He never starts far though.
SPEAKER_03Hey, that's not true. The glib rogue. Yeah, but that's that that fits a rogue. Yes. Right. Yeah. Right. You can be a glib barbarian too. Anyway, look, here's our options. We stay out here tonight and freeze and attempt to recover everything we can in the morning, and then plow on through this blizzard to the town of Miro's Rest, where maybe they have something for us in monies, assuming Halver doesn't come out. And maybe we don't freeze to death in this mountain right now in this blizzard. Right. Which is look feeling really likely. It is very cold. Found an ancient dwarven road sign that says dwarf road that way. And you see the pointing towards the east. And that's the way we can take all this stuff here. We can gather everybody up and we can struggle our way to a potential dwarf hole where we go into the ground, and I've heard a very specific 56-degree number. I don't want to die in no dwarf hole. I don't either, but it's 56 degrees. It's not a hole. It's a mansion of our people. Have respect. You haven't been there. You don't know. We don't make or live in holes. Well, what do you call it? Yes, that is true. What do you call it? Diggy diggy mansion. Diggy hole. We're going to go to the dwarf home. Whose home is it? How old is this? I'm just staring at you at this point. The bare radio. You can look at the sign. How old is it? How old is this? It looks well, honestly, the carving and everything is still very crisp, but it's stone, so it could be very old. Okay. Sigfried. Have you ever heard of this dwarven? Stigier? Stigger. Sigfried. Stigir? He might not want to come over.
SPEAKER_01Where's Roy?
SPEAKER_03Stigier's over by the fire he built near the five. I'm going to go talk to this guy. I mean, like, that he was digging up Hellberg. Yeah, he is. Did he get Halbert out of the hole? No. So he just abandoned it. He just gave up. Well, it got cold and had to go warm up by the fire. Poor Halvard. Yeah. Not only give no friends. Give it all three times. It goes so far, right? Still alive. When you're digging to try to save somebody's life, if you're going to lose fingers, it's counterproductive. So yeah. They weren't really friends to begin with. I don't think so. You should know, Pool, I wouldn't let you stay in a hole. He doesn't want to fight much either, unfortunately. Well, I'd like to fight for my life, but I'd also like to make some money out of this expedition somehow. And since there clearly aren't any actual dwarves in the mountain over there, or they would have like been trading with people and stuff, right? Yeah. Okay. So that means that it's an abandoned dwarven home. And what happens if you find an abandoned dwarven home? In the short term, it's warm enough for us to live. Right. How far away is it? A couple miles. The point is, my point that I'm getting at is that maybe there's some treasure weapons, armor, dwarven artifacts in the hole. Don't even think about it, Laddie.
SPEAKER_04Alright, so I'm not going to get paid if I go to the dwarf. Oh my gosh. So there's no good of going anywhere. How about we go back?
SPEAKER_03Well, we all just sit around this fire until we die.
SPEAKER_04So let's just go back.
SPEAKER_01So we're found. I'm going to put it later. Dig Hellgard up all frozen.
SPEAKER_04Sitting around a fire. Give me a strength check. We'll be like the guys on Everest. There's a green suit guy. There's a brown suit guy. Okay.
SPEAKER_03I think we should go to the dwarf home, but I also don't think we should be afraid to take anything we find when we get there. I don't want to go to the dwarf home. So you're having this discussion. You notice the halfling is helping Stigger dig out Halvard. It was his shift. He's good at it. Don't ask me how. The half is digging well. There's now a hole that seems to be approaching where Halvard is. That little guy dynamite. He doesn't seem to be responding anymore. The dude's dead. That's right. Does he have a coin purse? Who? Halvard. Maybe. We have to get him up.
SPEAKER_01Didn't he have that map that he wouldn't show anything? Oh, okay. So he's not unearthed, he's just no longer responding.
SPEAKER_03The hole is still there, but you're much closer. Like if you put the pole back in there, you've got a couple more feet to go before you get to him. Stick him with the poles, if he's alive. Well, he's not complaining. So I mean, you hit him with the pole, and you hear he's alive. He's alive. Doesn't sound like he's very alive, but he's alive. Why don't you walk like down there and pray to him or something? I have to be able to pray to pray to him. Give him last right. Oh, great Halvard in the snow.
SPEAKER_01Or if you have a stick and you stick him with 20 minutes before you get him out.
SPEAKER_03That's a technicality. Is anybody doing anything of note, or are we just digging him out? I'm preparing all my equipment. I'm making snowshoes. Right. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Don't we want his map?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, because a good idea. It's great. Just pick his map up, leave the rest of him there. Yeah. And his coins if he has any. It's the only money we're gonna make on this expedition. Okay. So I don't know that his map was all that great. The temperature is still dropping. We're gonna need to get inside. We're gonna need to go. Yeah, we need to go. Everybody get your stuff. We're going in. How far? Mile or two. Don't worry, the walk will worm you up, Halbert. That's confidence born of just making something up. What I need is for everybody to let me know what they are taking with them and how. My stuff and whatever. Presumably you're taking anything on your character sheet. I'm taking four. Are we using wagons to get there? Are we taking horses off of the wagons to get there? What are we doing?
SPEAKER_04Well, I have a horse. How about the rest of you?
SPEAKER_03You have two horses that came with a wagon. Yes. Taking a wagon. All of them. What if the wagon can't get down this ravine? Well, then we stop and leave it where we have it. Like we'll leave it there and we'll take the horses. That's fair. As long as it doesn't slow us up immediately. If we can get it hitched and get it going immediately, right? Yes. There's always two wagons ready to go. All right. Yeah, there's actually four wagons that are out and mobile. Right. But he means ready, like harnessed up and everything. Yeah. With horses. You'd have to improvise on some of them. The mead wagon and one of the other ones. Imagine what this is going to look like when the snow melts. It's going to be a disaster. A train wreck. Yeah. A disaster. It'd be robbed.
SPEAKER_04That first couple weeks smell terrible.
SPEAKER_03That's right. There'll be a lot of vultures up here next week. Think a dragon did this. Bear. Yeah, a very big dragon. The bear will eat well. So yeah, we should take everything we can in the wagons, the entire kit and caboodle, everything. As far as we can. How long are we taking to do this? How long does it take? You estimate you have about maybe three hours before sundown. I would say we do it with extreme haste. Yes, we got movement right now. All right. No fanciness. We're struggling. We're making a do however it takes whatever it takes, right? Everybody agreed? And which wagons are we taking? All four that aren't stuck in the snow. The mead and food wagon. All of them. Okay. So within an hour, you can have everything hitched up and ready to go and loaded with what you want to take.
SPEAKER_01Remember, they have that one wagon that's warm.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, we have the main wagon. Furnace in there or whatever, the stove in it. There's nothing useful in there. We'll close the door and leave the heat. Warmth.
SPEAKER_01It'll be like living in a dwarven hole.
SPEAKER_03It's like a hole. You can pretend it's a dwarf hole. So the snow has deepened as time has gone by. It takes very great offense to hold it. It is still snowing. So and it is slow going in the wagons. Alright. But after a couple hours of travel, it's getting dark. Are you planning to stop for the night or try to push on to what you believe is a dwarven hole? We're pushing on. Well, do we have anything to make a fire with? There are trees around you. There's wooden wagons.
SPEAKER_01I mean, if we can make a fire and stay warm and I guess we can melt some snow for water. If we can survive the night with enough warmth, then we can then we should stop.
SPEAKER_03If we can't build a fire, we have to push on.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_03Right? How much further? Yeah, well, that's the real question, isn't it? I'm the boss. How far do we have to go? I got to I'm looking. I'm looking. How far do we have to go? I think he's trying to turn this particular table on you.
SPEAKER_04We've been traveling a whole day here.
SPEAKER_03No money. The problem is it's snowing heavily. Different kind of leadership now, my friend. And light is fading. More of the same. Visibility is not great.
SPEAKER_01Now there's no hope of pay. Meet the new boss.
SPEAKER_03But you can see that you are, you know, I see in snow, you just see a shadow. Sure. Yeah. So you see like the shadow of a ridgeline ahead of you. You're not sure how far, because you don't know how high it is, but you're approaching some sort of formation. Keep going. Okay. And as you continue, you see I lead the way with a torch if we need to. Yeah. It's not smoke, it might be steam or something rising from a point in that formation into the sky. All right. Well, if it's steam, it's warm.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03It's the crazy ice dragon or a bunch of snakes. Everybody give me a constitution just snakes. A bunch of snakes. DC 14. Oh shit.
SPEAKER_01You won't say that one.
SPEAKER_04I'm I'm I fell in the snow. Okay. Yeah. You got a one. Did anyone make it?
SPEAKER_03I Doctor, did you get a natural one as well? Yeah. I got an 18. I got a two. You're still marching along. You feel you feel fine.
SPEAKER_01I'm not digging a hole. I'm not going to make these rolls.
SPEAKER_03Did anyone make it or fail it by less than three? You could add the rest of our scores up, and we would have failed it by three. I'm not kidding. Four, two, one, one. Right? All right. We just got beat by weather. So you all take two points of damage in frostbite. My toes are getting frozen.
SPEAKER_01Sure. Glad I wasn't healed with my old health.
SPEAKER_03Glad that healing just went there, dude. As the wagons finally roll into view of this massive face of finely carved stone with a roughly 10 by 20 opening that leads into darkness. Home. It's home.
SPEAKER_01It's right up there. It's home.
SPEAKER_03When you say face, did you mean literally or in the face of the rock? Rock face is what I took that. Kind of both. It is a rock face. Natural formation, but the bottom maybe 30 feet is finely carved flat. And then there's a 20 by 10 opening with intricate stonework around it. What used to be a doorway. But no hinged. And there is something laying inside the door that may have been a door at one point. You see two vents at either corner that look like faces. And from the mouths come just streams of what looks like white smoke or steam. Well, I think we can also do that. Well, that's a little fucking ominous. Whatever danger is in there is not going to kill us immediately. But the weather may very well do so. We need to go into Great Thrules' ancestral home and search for a place of 56 degree warmth. Okay. I'm not going to be as cocky about it as Gimli, though. Are you driving the wagons in? It is very much die if we don't. Okay. Right. It's a mine. So who is in the first wagon to enter? And which wagon is. It's a mine. I'll be the leader. I'll go first. And it's the wagon of the wooden top. Okay, so it's the heated wagon. Yeah, but we closed it up, and I don't care where Stigger is, but he ain't with me. Okay. So you drive the wagon in and you enter a very dark passage. You have no light source to speak of. Well, we can remedy that. Okay, are we lighting torches? I mean, I thought he said he already had one. Well, I had lit one, but that was hours ago. So that it's long gone. Yeah, I erased it off my character sheet. Right. I'm gonna I'm gonna Oh, yeah, we gotta set a timer now, huh? Or do torches. I'll take care of that. All right. But we're only going to go, you know, whatever it takes to get out of the immediately frozen. We're gonna make a camp inside the entrance. Out of the immediately frozen bit, and we can make a trip out maybe to get some wood or dismantle part of a wagon and burn that to get a little warm. Yep. Anyone disagree? Nope. I hear the new leadership is pretty shit, but I think that's probably what we should do. Leadership sucks around here.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I agree. No decision making. No, never getting freaking paid. No, I know. We all know where we are, where we're going. Right?
SPEAKER_03And we don't know how we're gonna get there. We're out of here. Okay, so how far are you going into this tunnel?
SPEAKER_04That's very we don't want to run into any snakes.
SPEAKER_01We're gonna get shelter from the storm outside, and we're gonna we're gonna attempt to make a camp in the first area.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. You go probably 10-15 feet inside, and the temperature has risen significantly. It's probably now maybe 40 degrees. 56. Oh, that's real like a sweltering summer day. I was expecting 56 and bigger leaf. Well, we're not deep enough for 56 yet. Right. You're still at the point where man speaks truth. You can easily see the entrances. We can still see minus six degrees now here. In rolling into this, that initial whatever it was, looks like massive metal doors that were battered in and are now laying on the floor. So we can't close the door. Are they wooden doors? Metal, massive metal doors. Okay, I'm sorry. Finely worked, finally carven. It's as if this was the portal into this that was battered down at some point. We're not gonna worry about what would batter down huge metal doors right now. The amount of dust and dirt makes it pretty clear it was a very long time ago. This was a great decision. But that does bring up a good point, just as a are there any snake tracks in here? Slithery Slither marks. So we're looking for that after driving the wagons in. Well, no, we go just uh past where we parked the wagons. That is a fair point. Well, I get it, but I mean if we park the wagons 20 feet in or 50 feet in, we go 60 feet to look for the snakes. At 60 feet, it is bare stone for the most part. There is some dust and dirt. I would say if you're doing the looking, I don't know. I don't have any special skills in this department. We don't snake finding. No tracking or anything like that. No snake finding. So if you're doing the looking, tracking would say what was that, intelligence or wisdom? No, it was whiz. I think wisdom. Tracking. I rolled an 18. Okay. There's definitely some recent disturbances, but not snakes. Maybe. Are there any five footprints?
SPEAKER_01There's more than snakes.
SPEAKER_03Alright. Well, it doesn't matter. Right, it doesn't matter because we're making a fucking camp. Right. As Thrul it doesn't matter. We'll worry about that later. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Should we heal before we camp or I for one would probably request some healing?
SPEAKER_03You would like healing. I'm four out of fourteen. So I'm one out of five. Oops.
unknownNot good.
SPEAKER_03Not good. Now you can't cast that. Now I can't.
SPEAKER_04Now we have to rest. You failed. I failed. Okay. Well, let's see how bad you failed. Not that good. Oh, that's a one. Yeah, one.
SPEAKER_01He's healing Sean right now. No, he's not knowing. If he failed, he was casting it. I started to cast and I got a shiver and it went a little bit.
SPEAKER_03My fingers were too frozen. They are absolutely too frozen. Yeah. He passed his role, though. Did he? Yeah, he's the only one who did. Oh, that role, yeah. Yeah. Well, we make camp. What else are you going to do? Right. Describe to me how you're making camp in this tunnel. How wide is it? Are you just like throwing a fire down? Describe the tunnel to us, other than there's a door on the floor. It is.
SPEAKER_01And then we'll tell you how we're preparing the camp.
SPEAKER_03As the entrance, it is 20 feet wide and 10 feet high. Okay. Some visual aid would help. Very map. Finely carven stone. Okay. In the center of the tunnel, there are what appear to be the worn tracks of wagons. Okay. So in the stone itself. In the stone itself. Like many wagons passing over many years. Oh yeah. I gotcha. Worn like at the joints, it's worn down a little bit, that sort of thing. So they would actually bring wagons in here. Clearly, a lot of feet and a lot of horses and a lot of wagons pass this way. Okay. Over a long time. It leads off at the same finely carved precision into darkness. Okay. It is warm. How wide? 40 degrees. That's the key question. Didn't that? Twenty feet. Twenty feet. Okay. So all right. And are there any other alcoves or openings on either of the two walls leading into the darkness? Nothing that you see from where we are. Okay. With your current light source and your position, it is just a smooth, fine tunnel. Alright. Okay. And we need to pull the wagons off to the circle the wagons. Well, though. We're going to arrange the wagons blocking the tunnel. Okay. Yeah. Well, we might not be able to get it sideways. Internal or external? Or both? Internal. So here's what we're going to do. Can we fit three wagons? If anything coming through that storm, they're welcome to us. Right. Can we fit three wagons in a 20-foot wide corridor? Probably not. Two. Okay, so two then. So we take two wagons, we put them up against the wall as tight as we can get them. We unharness the horses. We take the horses off. We pull the horses back through so the wagons are on the inside as a barricade between us and the dungeon itself. We can do the exact same thing on the other side, put the other two wagons on the back, take the horses off. Now we're in the center with the wagon, two wagons on each side and an opening in the middle. Which we can then build a fire. Build a fire in the center of that entire thing. We can sleep next to the walls, put the horses there on one side, we can sleep on the other. Then we have something out of the wagons. We can actually pile shit up to make a little barricade. I need to get warm. I'll work for it. Take that shit, put it in the center between the wagons, so that anything that wants to come from either direction has to climb over that and we can guard it as a defensive parameter. What he said. Would you like me to draw you a map of a plan? No, that's fine. And as for the getting warm part, you feel like it's summer. After coming in from that those temperatures at 40 degrees, you're taking stuff off because you're sweating. Is this yours? It's that warm.
SPEAKER_01That's dangerous.
SPEAKER_03I should have one of those for coming up with such a detailed plan. I'll give you mine. Thanks, man. I appreciate that. At least somebody recognizes.
SPEAKER_04You can give your luck tokens.
SPEAKER_01Okay, just to describe what happened really quickly for those out in uh just listening. Rodney reached across and grabbed Doc's luck token and said, Oh, this is yours, and threw it back.
SPEAKER_03Asked him if it was his. Then said, I should have a luck token, and then Doc gave him a luck token.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, because I can get a luck token every day. Well, what the hell, man? Why don't I already have one? I feel that's right. That's what you guys are believed. Both work in the system admirably. Can he transfer that luck? I think you can give luck tokens. That's the only one.
SPEAKER_03Even if the rules say you're not, I'm gonna say it's meta currency. It can be my deity give candy?
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_03What's that? Does my deity give candy? No.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_03Not the way you've been acting. That's fair. Murder hobo. We didn't kill anyone. So do we get through the night? How does our plan work? You take the time to arrange things as described. Right. And are you setting watches? Yes, we're setting watches. What are the watches? Are we doing three? Are we doing four? And who's taking one? We're all doubling up. Yeah, let's all I agree. One in each side. We're gonna alternate 20-minute shifts. So no one gets any rest. Since I've been re-elected leader of the character.
SPEAKER_01Reelect? I don't remember this ever happening. You were appointed by somebody who had no authority to appoint you. Which is notice himself.
SPEAKER_03I'm gonna appoint Glem the watchmaster now so he could come up with the watches. Wow, this is like passive aggressive stuff going on here. How? I don't think we need them. No. Thrall is so at home here, he doesn't think you need him either.
SPEAKER_01Oh, interesting.
SPEAKER_03No, he definitely said yes. Don't tell me how my character thinks. You feel like you're at home. Okay. I do feel like I'm at home. But we're still gonna watch it. I don't trust snakes. This is a hole that is the finest craftsmanship you've ever seen. Still a hole. The carving here is a big dark immaculate.
SPEAKER_01It's a big dark hole into the side of a mountain.
SPEAKER_03Each of the uh the support pillars that you see as you walk down this tunnel are ornately carved. If I hear him throwing the hole word around, I'm going to say I would cut off your head halfling if it stood but a little further from the ground.
SPEAKER_01As you're looking up to me.
SPEAKER_03As if he's in a hole. Alright. So what are your watches? So I by the way, I killed, I assumed that the caravan drivers of the wagons that we abandoned were left there, right? Anyone that is not currently with you is dead. Right, but the what the so essentially the wagons that we saved, those are the drivers that are alive, right?
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_03Burned, right? Okay. All right. So we have four Hagen, Ulf, Ingolf, and Elof. All the ladies died. Okay. Very unfortunate. Terrible. But none of them had beards. So that's fair. All right. Just how I like them, by the way. So again, we're gonna have what are the watches and who's taking them?
SPEAKER_01We're gonna have three. I'm gonna take the first one because I didn't suffer any ice damage on the way in.
SPEAKER_03Okay. And from a resting perspective, mechanically, you need an eight-hour rest without a watch? To benefit from it, yes. Well, rest doesn't mean sleep. Right. It just means no. So whoever has middle doesn't heal. Is that for sure? That's weird. That's the major reason why we are the way we are right now. If the watches are uninterrupted, then it counts as rest. Oh, okay. Okay, good. The problem is there's a lot of shit out there that smells food. Right. Oh, like moose. Yeah, they're hungry. That wasn't during night. We were attacked by an herbivore. We were. Well no, if you remember correctly, someone tried to attack the herbivore. That's right. It wasn't one of us. Right.
SPEAKER_04Freaking NPCs. I mean, it looked delicious. Look where he is now. Right.
SPEAKER_03Technically, we one of us had attacked his right next to you. Yeah, it was all downhill once that arrow left that bow. Right.
SPEAKER_01Why would you attack a moose? I understand attacking a polar bear, but a bear that attacked you.
SPEAKER_03It didn't attack anybody when it came into camp and then you attacked it. Which seems very reasonable. Is there any of this moose in any of the wagons that we brought? Well, you did one of the wagons was the mead and cook wagon. So yes, we have some food. You have food. Okay. You have some mead. There are cooking tools there. There is mead. So you can build a firewood. Everything is going to be all right. You can fill a pot, melt snow. Do we have to get the firewood from outside? Because we don't exactly have except for our wagons, which we really don't want to burn.
SPEAKER_01Burn the benches out of the wagon. You would, we can buy the wagon.
SPEAKER_03There's like crates and stuff. In the wagons, there is like kindling. Yeah, but I mean like wood. But if you want to burn a long-term fire with any size, somebody's going to have to go out and get some. What sends dogs carrying? Nope. I'll go with you. Mirror. Learn my lesson. Come on, Rawlmar. But you do recall as you rolled in, there were small trees all over the place. Yeah. Coming in. They were conifers, so. Were they dead ones? That's what we really need. Well, pines will have lots of oil in them that'll snap and pop. That'll snap and pop and burn. Yeah. But they'll still burn. Anybody want to smoke like business. There's already smoke coming out. They smell awesome, though. Yeah. Let's go. I'm going to go and smell like Christmas. And guess. Get some firewood.
SPEAKER_01If we knew what that was.
SPEAKER_03Gade mess. So who's going for firewood? I am. And I'd like to. I don't know. I'd like to hope someone else would come with a channel. Stigger will go with you. I don't own an axe. I guess Stigger doesn't want to be in the cave entrance with me. I don't want him out here with me, but I'm not going to say anything because I need the help. He is the experienced woodsman of the group, so. Oh, yeah, it's a good idea.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he'll go with you.
SPEAKER_04Alright. Then I rescind my offer to go with you.
unknownJesus.
SPEAKER_04I want to stay here.
SPEAKER_03But you're a lot better at cutting down trees than he'd be. Oh, God. Okay. Jeez. I'm just here to dig holes. When we get the mirror's rest, you can call your union rep. Choke somebody. Better get paid for the shit. Roll 2D10 and add the mo. He's going to get a 97. All right. It's a four and a seven. It's a left.
SPEAKER_01I saw it. It was a 47. Okay.
SPEAKER_03So Stigier and Drek here head out into the cold in search of firewood. I think I guilt at Rawlmart.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_03You're not sure the lot of you could. No, I it is huge and metal. I was being horses.
SPEAKER_01We wrote the horses.
SPEAKER_03I know. I was being ironical. Dwerving facetious. But it is freaking huge.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_03Alright, so you head out into the cold. Are there any specific plans back at camp while they're gone? Of some food. Make a fire, cook some food, melt some snow for water.
SPEAKER_01Use the kin and basic fire, getting prepped, getting ready.
SPEAKER_03Make sure somebody's looking down the hallway. Is anyone scouting down the hallway or just keeping watch? Just watching. Who's keeping watch down the hallway?
SPEAKER_01Just staring down. I can, I'll stare down the hallway.
SPEAKER_03Okay. You're you don't have to stare down the hallway, but I want I want to stare down. Alright, you're staring down the hallway. You know, if you stare into the blackness, we'll stare back into the room. You stare into the inky blackness.
SPEAKER_01The void, as it were.
SPEAKER_03The abyss. The cosmic horror.
SPEAKER_01In a dwarf and tunnel. Alright. It's okay.
SPEAKER_03So those of you who are venturing forth for firewood, how long do you want to spend doing that? How much wood are we looking to gather? Enough for the night. Yeah, at least enough to have a decent fire to cook and as much as we can to get through the night. So each of you can easily chop down a small tree or sapling.
SPEAKER_01Taking four cold damage.
SPEAKER_03No. And they're found dead. With the easy heat source in the tunnel, it's not hard to run back and warm up if they need to. Right. The woods aren't that far away. So you manage to, in about an hour's time, each of you take down a sapling and prep it and bring it in. A sapling? I got one sapling in an hour. You got a sapling.
SPEAKER_01Well, I got a big axe.
SPEAKER_03But by sapling, I'm talking like a six, eight foot pine. Yeah, not a so a Christmas tree. Yeah, basically. So it's gonna burn for about an hour.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. We need a bigger tree. We need some bigger trees. Or bigger branches off the tree.
SPEAKER_03If you're going for a bigger tree, figure with if the three of you focus on a large tree. We can just cut branches off of the bottom of a pine tree. You could. And then just hack through the two or three inch branches. We'll get every two or three inch branch in this area, and we'll drag them. So hour and a half. You've collected enough wood. Yep. While you're out there, you do see a family of three moose kind of wander by. Don't do it. Can't do it. You have a bull, a cow, and a calf. I get behind Stegeer. Like a yearling. Don't just in case he pulls his bow out, I stab him in the back. He's very focused on chopping wood. God damn right he is. And the moose don't come very close. They hear your noise. Oh, but now they don't care about our noise. You see them. Don't tell Stegeer. Nobody shot him. They kind of look at you like idiots and then keep going. Moose are very judgy. Nice little moose family there. Judgy. Judgy. They are.
SPEAKER_02Wow.
SPEAKER_03Mama moose, they are the judgiest of the deer family. If you've ever encountered them, they look at you with great disdain. They're the largest and judgiest. They are. I mean, when you're large, you get the chance to judge. Yeah, you do. You don't have to worry about staying like running from things. Okay. So you make it back in. So the animal kingdom. You prep the wood, you drag it in, you have enough wood to make it through the night, or so you believe.
SPEAKER_01They would live in Portland and have a flannel shirt on and a handlebar mustache.
SPEAKER_03And suspenders. You've just alienated half of our audience.
SPEAKER_01We're sorry.
unknownGod damn it.
SPEAKER_03Well, no, we're definitely not hip enough to be here. That's fair. Beloved by a hipster. We're a bunch of grognards. So all right. So you settle in for the night in seeming safety and warmth. We'll find out what happens next on the next episode of Retro Rollcast.
