Retro Role Cast
"Serious roleplaying games played by deeply unserious people."
We are a tabletop roleplaying actual play podcast featuring games that remind us of our gaming roots! We play in person with real math rocks! We love gritty, high action dark settings with nuance, but aren't too far away from our bitter, cynical, yet still lovable selves at all times!
Currently: Going way back to many of our players' 1e roots by playing the new third edition of OSRIC (pdf available free on DrivethruRPG, fantastic hard copies available through Mythmere Games) with a home cooked mini (?) campaign in the World known as Greyhawk in the classic era. follow along as the PCs navigate the dangerous environments and tricky politics of the Duchy of Tenh/Theocracy of the Pale border region!
In season one we played Low Fantasy Gaming by Pickpocket Press, Its sequel game Tales of Argosa is released, available, and comes highly recommended by all of us, stop by Pickpocket Games on the web for more info!
Season two saw a transition to a modified Version of Old School Essentials (Advanced) by Gavin Norman, one of many retro offshoots of the world's most popular role playing game. We borrow rules and content from many sources, but with Old School Essentials we used (in no particular order), Old School Feats by Eric Diaz, Into The Wyrd and Wild by Charles Furgeson-Avery, Into the Wild by Todd Leback, The Axian Library by Guiseppe Rotondo, and the Monster Overhaul by Skerples, amongst other sources.
With the close of Season 2 and the addition of two new Retro Role Casters we have moved to a more episodic format for Season 3. We are referring to seasons 1 and 2 as our Zero Level Funnel of Podcasting.
Season three and into the first part of Season four the four OG hosts took turns GM-ing one shots, Three Shadowdark adventures because we love Kelsey's fantastic Old meets New game, Mothership to satisfy our love of the Alien Movies and a Halloween special using the Call of Cthulhu rules.

Retro Rocast, Shadow Dark, The Corsairs of Anon Tune, Episode Two. Rogue, you guys saw Union disappear in the hole, and the rope has stopped moving.
SPEAKER_01Well, I guess it's my turn. I will take a deep breath and pull myself through this orifice.
SPEAKER_00Okay. All right. And similar to him, you're able to pull yourself very quickly through, and you come up spluttering and you hear uh the sound of you what you presume to be union moving around in the water in the room. So you pull yourself up, and the water's probably like there's like a floor, but there's like a foot and a half to two feet of water above the floor. Okay. And this water tastes clean. It's a trap. It's a trap. I do take a drink. But you come up on the other end as well. Absolutely pitch black.
SPEAKER_01Alright. I'm gonna force myself over to the uh shore.
SPEAKER_00Okay, and we'll get back to you too.
SPEAKER_04Did they take all their stuff with them? Yes. I'm naked. Except for what you gave me. Yep. It survived a splash through the ocean. Yeah, it's all like a whale skin bag. Alright, so we got our three followers. Did they come down here with us?
SPEAKER_00They're at the other end of the cave looking at you.
SPEAKER_04You guys wait here. If we die, you come rescue us and give me your character sheet. We'll tell you when we die. So if you don't mind. Cragshag. Right on, my friend. Thumbs up. You might be a member of the crew before you know it. Battlefield promotion. All right. So between the three of us that are left, who wants to go next? Fighters are last.
SPEAKER_05Fighters are last. Well, no, actually, when I see that the devil woman goes, I immediately start and go into the hole.
SPEAKER_00Okay. So you actually went in before.
SPEAKER_05Well, whatever the terms may be.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, you can go in before me.
SPEAKER_05I didn't get there, they got in first, but I'm I got no problem with this. I'm not waiting. I went in.
SPEAKER_04All right, and you uh I wait until the rope stops twitching or until it gets a couple of shugs on, and then I hold my breath and drag myself and all of my gear through the dark hole under the water.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Do we need a and the four of you are in darkness but breathing air again? And you've seen all four of your friends disappear into the hole. And nobody's come back. Nobody's come back.
SPEAKER_05Friend is a cut the rope.
SPEAKER_00This is just this is your big chance. This is it. This is it. Save the day. To go recruit Craig Shag and the boys and GTFO.
SPEAKER_04Let's go be pirates. We're out of here.
SPEAKER_00I don't really like those guys, so uh Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I will head into the hole and hope that they're not back because they're not all dead. Sure lay out like we are dead.
SPEAKER_05Alright, and you've been standing in the water for a while.
SPEAKER_00All five of you are now at the other end of the cave and breathing air again.
SPEAKER_05In the dark.
SPEAKER_00Feeling around, you the cave seems to be like eight feet in somewhat of an oblong shape. You feel your way around like a basically like a half turn, and there's like a an entrance, and then you feel what you would swear to be wood. Oh knock on it. And you hear like a wet, like a dull knock on the on the wall. We're standing in the dark, right? Yes.
SPEAKER_04Okay. Sorry, I just when he was flailing around there, I was just like picturing him running into the chick. I couldn't see anything, but uh just Well, you hear Constance Loshing, like she's getting out of your way. Oh, wait.
SPEAKER_01She can probably see us.
SPEAKER_04She'd have to know where we were for that. Yes, yes. Well, let's get a torch going here. Yeah, anyway. Unfortunately, I think mine hall I thought you had a light spell. I have no. Why would I have a light spell? Because you're a sorcerer. I had torches. A wizard. All right, you're right. I didn't take it for that very reason. Torch count, I got two. None. I have two, but no means to light it. So we have I have all the above.
SPEAKER_05I have oil.
SPEAKER_04We have eight torches, is what I just saw. I saw two fingers from three of us and one finger from two of us.
SPEAKER_05And I have oil and I have four.
SPEAKER_00Alright, I'll light one of mine. Pour the oil in the water and light it. Don't do it.
SPEAKER_05I pour the oil. Oh.
SPEAKER_02Do you touch it? Do you touch it?
SPEAKER_05Does Mr. Wizard know of a species of creature that can see in the dark?
SPEAKER_04I'm lighting a torch. Well, to mine.
SPEAKER_00Well, it might start in this game, interestingly, is part of an actual rule. Is all characters are presumed not to be able to see in the dark, but all monsters are presumed to be able to see in the dark.
SPEAKER_05So she's a monster. She's definitely a monster. Creature abomination.
SPEAKER_04Right. Shh. Meanwhile, our torch is lit, and we only got eight of them. Here we go, here we go. No talking about who can see in the dark. We can all see now.
SPEAKER_00Okay, so the torch sputters to life. Who's gonna be the torch? Lighting up the cavern. You all are standing in about a foot and a half to two feet of water. It's too bad. The room is oblong and about eight feet from end to end at the longest point. It's about six feet. So it's damn tight. From side to side.
SPEAKER_01Not to butt.
SPEAKER_00And in the opposite side from where you crawled out, there is a ramshackle wooden door just set into the volcanic rock. Well is it? It doesn't appear to be in very good shape, but there's like a wooden door there. Anything carved on it? Very dilapidated, deteriorated wood. Above, on the opposite wall from the door, you see another silver spike above where the hole goes back down into the water. Yeah, so you tie a rope from spike to spike and maybe it's a teleport.
SPEAKER_05It's a port key.
SPEAKER_04So, all right. That's way too much. Mr. Pirate Man, there uh union. I did. I did. Okay. So high tide is a certain level. Now we don't know what level that is, but we knew it was low because you said so, right? It's low tide right now. We don't know when high tide's coming, but high tide will fill this room up with water, correct? I would think so, yeah. All right.
SPEAKER_05To the spike, probably.
SPEAKER_04That's that was my thought. Maybe. Couldn't possibly know for sure. Except for maybe barnacle levels on the side of the thing, etc. etc. But clearly that we don't want that to happen. So let's go through the door. What's my god, what should we let's make up a name for her. Red red eye. Ready. Red.
SPEAKER_02Red. So let's see what red's doing. And she's just out of the way, right? She's just like Yeah, she's just glaring at you. She's not like, yeah, no, fine. You know what? I glare at her every time, too. Honestly, yeah, I'm gonna give her right back. Something tells me that she's uh anti-thesis to our thesis? Antithetical, right? Antithetical. To Saint Tarragnus the lawful. He's now a he's now a glib priest.
SPEAKER_04Yes. Anti-saint. Really, I wish I had a glib comeback to that. So we need to get through the door.
SPEAKER_05Just because she has red eyes.
SPEAKER_04I'm gonna check the door.
SPEAKER_01Kick that door down, big burly guy.
SPEAKER_04Well, let me just put it this way. She don't speak celestial.
SPEAKER_05She don't speak celestial. So is the door locked? Does anyone check?
SPEAKER_04No, it's your eye. And by anyone, you mean I'm gonna check the door. Oh shit. Yeah, let the priest check the door.
SPEAKER_00All right. So the the the door is the wood is not in good shape. It's waterlogged. It is it's old, barely being held together by the nails and such. But you push it, it doesn't budge. You you feel it's probably barred on the other side.
SPEAKER_04Pull it. You got a big boot. Break it down.
SPEAKER_00Pull on it. Try pulling it.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I pull on the door.
SPEAKER_00It doesn't budge. It was worth a shot. It was. Yeah. Why would you bor the door on the other side and then have it open this way?
SPEAKER_04Because people do that.
SPEAKER_03You just never know, right? Have you played this game before?
SPEAKER_04Jesus. Oh yeah, that totally works.
SPEAKER_00All right, a run.
SPEAKER_03I'm going to attempt to uh bust in the door.
SPEAKER_00Attack the door. Strength check. It's easy. You gotta beat a nine. We're not kidding. Guys, you think we're gonna do that?
SPEAKER_03That would be a natural 20. The door is gone. See?
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah. You just pulled it open. Kool-Aid man right through that door. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. You laughed at that. You laughed at his technique. You stagger, you you disintegrate that door. The every fitting on it flies apart, bar breaks in half on the other side. A mighty crash.
SPEAKER_03See, like I said, all great for shit. It doesn't matter.
SPEAKER_00The uh the the doors fall into the water with a splash, and you stagger through about a foot or so into the following room. You're on door, and it's full of what bad guys ready to go. Well, the torch is behind you. So you're in darkness. Well, not in darkness.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. You just can't see very well. I shoot a magic missile at the end.
SPEAKER_01Alright, so I have that. He is just he is the first door union.
SPEAKER_03Hey, the door is open.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he disappeared to the other side. I will follow him.
SPEAKER_04Actually, can I have the bag back?
SPEAKER_05Can I have my bag back?
SPEAKER_04Oh, what bag? Oh, you mean this bag? Yeah, that bag. Thank you. What's in there? I didn't even open it. Yeah, that was awkward. Damn.
SPEAKER_03That was that should be his whole action because that felt really strange.
SPEAKER_05That was uncomfortable.
SPEAKER_00Alright, so so you grabbed the bag uncomfortable. Now we're down to roak. Aram has disappeared to the other side of the door. Creepily. Yeah. There was eye contact. Long, lingering eye contact on both of you. That's pretty awkward.
SPEAKER_04You guys are only making it up.
SPEAKER_00Like Boromir and Frodo in the Lord of the Rings movie. Did you tousle his hair? But with more palm sweat. More palm sweat. I'm going through the door. All right. So you slosh into the other room. A little bit of the torchlight is is bathing this room, and you see, also similarly covered in water. And you see, like on the other side, there's another tunnel going out straight ahead. And the two sides from what you can see until the torchlight enters the room, there's just blackness on the left and on the right.
SPEAKER_01So I can't see if it's uh entranceways or just the room's that wide.
SPEAKER_00It ends in darkness, but there's a corridor that goes out straight. Doesn't everything end in darkness? Everything in darkness eventually. And we are down to the torch bearer Dirk.
SPEAKER_04Fade to black. Dirk. Alright, so you have the light source. Oh, yeah. Come in the room with us. Is Red making any moves here? Because I'm totally going in the room. I'm just wanna. Well, she hasn't made any moves yet. And one other thing, before I didn't really look, there's nothing, no writings on the walls or anything like that in here. Volcanic rock. Just volcanic rock. All right. I go into the next room and obviously look for the next exit or whatever, hopefully. Okay. And you bring the torch into the next room. Shit. Hey, before we go, somebody make sure to grab that grapple and the rope. At least we'll have one of them.
SPEAKER_03Well, we would have brought one with us.
SPEAKER_00Well, one of them's tied to the spike on the other side. Right.
SPEAKER_04That one's that one we leave there for our quick escape in the event of crab demons, right? Like 60 feet. But pretty much the length of the rope.
SPEAKER_00So basically we can't necessarily take the rope and tie it up on the other end.
SPEAKER_04You mean the one that we could tie it to the spike? So that rope is tied on both ends of the spike. Spike to spike. Oh, we could spike to spike. Okay. All right. We could keep the one grapple and the spike and those 60 feet of rope that was.
SPEAKER_03I would assume why the spikes are there. That's an assumption. That's just me.
SPEAKER_00All right. So a lot of assumptions about that. You're going to have uh union do that after you. Yeah, I just want to make sure we didn't forget of it.
SPEAKER_04Yes. I don't know why it was awkward. I was just handing you a sack. It's really weird.
SPEAKER_00Only why it was awkward. I was just hit. Never mind.
SPEAKER_04When I listen to this later, I'll see if it was awkward when uh in real time. It was.
SPEAKER_00So our old time listeners know what we're about, but you do guys, we're sorry.
SPEAKER_04What we're really about right now is wasting my damn torch time.
SPEAKER_01You have to ask him if it was awkward or not. How long will it be? It runs it for an hour. We've known each other a long time.
SPEAKER_05Well, after he goes in the other room, it's dark in here, so I go into the next room with the light.
SPEAKER_00Okay, you and the girl follow Dirk into the room. The while Union is taking care of securing the, and I assume you're gonna follow once you have the grappling hook and the rope. I know how the rope and the grappling hook. So you find yourself in basically like a 15-foot like round cavern, and you can see tunnels actually going off in three directions, all cardinal directions.
SPEAKER_05Split the party.
SPEAKER_00So there's and you can't see very far down them, but you see tunnels ending in darkness to the north and to the east. The southern tunnel ends in a volcanic wall. So it's like a little nubby off, but it ends.
SPEAKER_03What was our original direction of travel going through the initial tunnel? East. Are you making a map? East would be inland. No, I was trying to keep track of my head.
SPEAKER_00Yep, east is inland from where you started. Is the floor wet here? Yes, the floor in this room is about a foot and a half to two feet deep.
SPEAKER_01Is there any parts of the door that didn't bust off that aren't completely soaked?
SPEAKER_00Uh the frame of the door is still there. But the top part of it was does the top part seem to get wet on a regular basis? It does not. Actually, it looks like about three-quarters of the way up the door is very waterlogged. Above that is dry.
SPEAKER_01Can we smash some of this off? We're gonna need more torches.
SPEAKER_03Well, we got we have like six or eight, right? We have eight torches.
SPEAKER_04That's eight hours. If we're in here eight hours, we're probably not making it out. Okay. I don't want to edit eight up. I didn't ask. You tried. I tried.
SPEAKER_00That's assuming nothing in the dark. Eight hours later.
SPEAKER_04Wizard, why didn't you bring more torches? Why don't you have the light spell? May you have the light spell?
SPEAKER_01Do you not? Maybe I will by the way.
SPEAKER_04No light spell. Because we have three casters and no light spell.
SPEAKER_05Correct. I was looking for infrared.
SPEAKER_00Okay, the girl seems to be keeping to the center of the room. She can see. And where were we at turn order? I think we're I went. You went. Aram, you're in the room. And the torch has just come in so you can see what everybody else sees. Right. So is there a passageway leading off in front of me? Correct. In the same direction as you went through the door.
SPEAKER_03I'm going to move down that corridor a bit. Okay. Keeping to the side, so hopefully a little light sweaks through. See what I can see.
SPEAKER_00All right. You go about 20, 15 feet down that down that passageway, and the the wall ends on your left hand side and on your right. The light spills out, and you see water ahead of you in the light. But this appears to be a larger room that you're in. But you can't tell the dimensions from where you are right now.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_00Union. I'm going to grab that stone out of the pouch. I'm actually going to pull it out while we're in the light here in the room. Okay. They may know what this is. And you see him holding a large fist-sized cerulean blue gemstone. Whoa, looks highly valuable.
SPEAKER_05Where'd you get that?
SPEAKER_04The captain threw it at me before we basically got shipwrecked. Well, he took a dagger in the back, but that's beside the point. Well, why'd you stab him? You stabbed the captain. You killed the captain? No, I said he got a dagger in the back. I didn't say he put it there.
SPEAKER_05Well, so you stabbed him.
SPEAKER_04So you haven't denied it either.
SPEAKER_05He is a thief. Anyway, that's neither here nor there. Beside our reactions, what are the other people's reactions?
SPEAKER_00Okay, so you pulled it and everybody is remarking on it. Yeah. Anything else? Does the chick say anything seem to be interested in it at all? She is her attention's on you right now. Okay. I might be able to her anger is directed in in the direction of union right now. Do you recognize this stone? Do you understand what I'm saying? Multipass. Elvish. She says something that you don't understand. I still understand her.
SPEAKER_03Do you want this stone? Well, I do.
SPEAKER_01I might be able to figure something out.
SPEAKER_03She's afraid of it? Yeah, like a wizard. So she understands us.
SPEAKER_05Interesting.
SPEAKER_03Gosh, I knew that. Talk slower and louder.
SPEAKER_05Do you deaf, not boring?
SPEAKER_00Oh, also, this is a podcast. I just shook my head no. Oh, right. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03She shaken her head no. Very good. Vigorously. Is this keeping you trapped here?
SPEAKER_04She shakes her head no again. Slower. Slower. So no, maybe. Would you like it to? All right. And you want to hand that to the wizard and let him wizard it up? Wizard it. Determine what this is. Drop it in the water so we can't find it.
SPEAKER_01I'm going to cast detect magic on it. Concentrate for two rounds. So the first round tells me if it is magical. Second round then tells me general usage.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_01But I have to make my check. Yes. Okay.
SPEAKER_00An 18. So that's 20. In your mind alone, the stone begins glowing. The rest of you don't see anything. You definitely see that.
SPEAKER_01I'm being like super fucking dramatic. I'm doing all these like hand motions and chanting really loud. I don't know.
SPEAKER_00I'm picturing for the detect magic. You don't, it is your wizardly opinion that this stone doesn't necessarily do anything by itself, but it's part of something.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Alright.
SPEAKER_00Part of something greater.
SPEAKER_01I tell my fellows what I have discerned. It's pretty important. I think we need to hang on to this, not sell it for cigarette money.
SPEAKER_00Alright. Okay. So you cast that spell. Off to Dirk.
SPEAKER_04Okay. So I got the light. Does anybody want to take over the light so that they can lead the way down these corridors? Union. Or Aaron Ron, the doorbreaker. Smasher. I'll take it.
SPEAKER_00Well, you're you're at the end of the hallway, so you're coming back?
SPEAKER_04No, wait for him to catch it. Oh, you're gonna go walk it down. I'll walk it down to him. Okay. Walk it down to him and then put it in my shield hand. Now you went which corridor did he go down? Oh, that's true. So that is east. That's more inland. Right. Just so you know, that's the ziggurat of Elemental Evil.
SPEAKER_03I'm looking for anything that goes up.
SPEAKER_04Well, I thought we were traveling there. We are now if we keep going east. Maybe that would be a boat ride. We're halfway to the ziggurat.
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_04And the ziggurat would actually be more to the north, wouldn't it? Yes. And it's a different spot. I think I don't think we're on the ziggurat island. I think we're underground and we can't be sure. I don't know. But there's no harm following this way, right? We got nowhere else to go. As far as we know. One of the three paths was dead end, a short like 10 or 15 feet like little thing that ends, right? Well, yeah, the one going south was. South. South. And south is the way we came. Now, I'm an experienced adventurer. Every wall or corridor ends in a secret thing. So somebody should investigate. You guys are learning from the last campaign.
SPEAKER_00Learning.
SPEAKER_05Everything must be touched. Gonna try not to leave the church.
SPEAKER_01Well, we learned our hard lesson when we trapped ourselves in with the demon wasp.
SPEAKER_04When you left the dungeon and the first dungeon before we looted it. The very first dungeon. That was somebody else's fault.
SPEAKER_00I know somebody wanted to leave really bad.
SPEAKER_04Oh no, I thought you were talking about the other time. I I don't think we honestly realized there was more dungeon.
SPEAKER_00I don't think we did have a dungeon. No, it wasn't obvious. It was just there. But then you also didn't open the sarcophagus that had all the loot in it because you were That was much later. That was after the Wasp Demon.
SPEAKER_01Because we were dumb.
SPEAKER_00But anyway, if you want to hear all this great stuff, retro roll cast on your favorite podcast provider. Do you want me to go check out the small room?
SPEAKER_04I yeah, I'm handing up like well, I mean you can, but I was really just opening the door.
SPEAKER_00So if you hand the the torch around, the big fighter guy now has the torch.
SPEAKER_04And he's not in that quarter, so you're not gonna see shit down there.
SPEAKER_05I want to go where the light is.
SPEAKER_00Okay, so you're keeping yourself within the light.
SPEAKER_05I am preferably behind red, if that can be maneuvered, but okay.
SPEAKER_00She hesitantly. Folllows everybody else and you can file in behind her.
SPEAKER_05Oh now she follows. Yeah, now she is. Yeah, I'm just following the light through here, keeping an eye on red.
SPEAKER_00Okay, Aram. You now have the torch in your hand and you see it play out. The room that you're in right now is vastly bigger than the last one. So the last one was about 15 feet round. This one actually to the north, to the north and the east, the light plays out without hitting a wall of any sort. Okay. To the south, you can see that to the south it ends after about 20 feet, and you can see a a volcanic rock wall there. There's like a little rivulet of water that is is tumbling down that rock face to the south. And emptying into the to the pool in this room with a splash. But no visible exits on the walls I can see. You can see, but you don't see any end beyond the torchlight. Right. You can see in the north and to the east. I'm gonna move again east. Okay. Let's see if I can find a wall, essentially. Alright, so you stride purpose purposefully to the east. And make me a dex check. Yeah, I made it. Under. What did you get? No, it's no it's over. That's over. Oh, it's a DC difficulty. You need to make 18. Oh, I did not make 18.
SPEAKER_04Oh shit. That's a tough check right there. I'll tell you what.
SPEAKER_00So a ROM steps out into the room holding the torchlight and plunges into the depths, the torchlight sizzling out as it as as it passes the surface of the water. And you're all in darkness.
SPEAKER_01Shit. See? I hate it when that happens. Now we're down to seven torches, I told you.
SPEAKER_04And four characters.
SPEAKER_00You're wearing what sort of four armor. Or leather armor. Leather armor. Okay, that's he has brakes in his pocket. Yeah, yeah. You sink down approximately like seven or eight feet, and you can you find that you're like in like a chasm sort of thing at the bottom of the floor. And you're freaked out. So you're scrabbling around looking for hand holds, things like that. You go down to the bottom, and your hands reach out and touch something that is not rock. Crab like. Okay. So the rest of you are in darkness. You don't know any of what I just told him. Union.
SPEAKER_04I grabbed the rope and throw it after him.
SPEAKER_00See if it can.
SPEAKER_04Oh, it's dark. Throw it in the direction. He knows the general direction. In that general direction, it happens.
SPEAKER_00Like a splash. Alright, you hear the rope splash. Okay. Good. The rope doesn't have any weights on the end of the room. You save the grappling hook does. Oh, the grab so you throw the grappling hook in. Yeah, with tied to the rope. All right. Make me a D6. Hooked in the air. One. Okay. You hear a splash above your head. You don't know what it portends. Great. You're possibly worried about other things right now. So are my feet on the bottom? Your feet are on the bottom right now, yeah. And the what your hand is feeling is chitenness. And we are down to roke. Kitonous. That can't be good.
SPEAKER_05Never is. Or it could be delicious. It could be. It could be both. A little butter.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. We're swimming in butter. I can't really do very much.
SPEAKER_00It's dark. That sounds gross. I don't want to swim in butter.
SPEAKER_01I'm going to uh stand here and contemplate my future.
SPEAKER_00Okay. All two seconds of it. All right, so you're in the darkness and both mentally and physically.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Yes. I'm shaking in my boots.
SPEAKER_00Dirk, you see the light go out in front of you in the in the in the cavern is plunged into total darkness. You hear the sound of struggling set this up better. Struggling below the waves. Really?
SPEAKER_04Narjoff, where are you? Where are you? Narjoff. Narjoff. Paging. That's you. I'm here. Okay, yeah. I need to know where you are. I'm walking towards you. Standing right here. Starting it up, man. Marco.
SPEAKER_01All right. Do we touch each other? Not in the no-no spot. I have flint. Longingly. Spark it. Just spark it.
SPEAKER_05Just spark the flint. I spark it.
SPEAKER_02Okay, so the two of you are working to walk up, and then I get his torch out of his backpack, and then I hold it out in front of his sparky bits.
SPEAKER_04And I'm not happy about that. Okay, so he's one.
SPEAKER_05So you're you're lighting a torch. Yes, I'm lighting it towards you. 55 minutes, 53.5. We seconds we are back.
SPEAKER_04I restarted the torch timer. Okay. Mine had half an hour left on it in case it comes to that. What do we see? I think in these rules, once it goes out, it's just gone.
SPEAKER_03Is it just gone?
SPEAKER_00Well, it's what is your armor class?
SPEAKER_03Who? My AC is a whopping 11. What is your underwater armor class? Well, with or without shield. Ooh, okay. Yeah, this shield.
SPEAKER_05You see a large bubble, red like in appearance, come up from the water.
SPEAKER_01Well, we wouldn't see that because it's dark. You got that lit, okay.
SPEAKER_00Okay, something massive seizes you. Massive. I don't like that word. Yeah, that's not a good word. And that does five points of damage. Ow, bitch. The water is red. And you are held fast in the grasp of something large, pointy, and painful.
SPEAKER_01So and it's your turn. I'm having a hard time with this. You have an 11 AC with leather. I have 11 AC with robes. No. 10. 10 plus one my decks.
SPEAKER_03I have no DEX bonus.
SPEAKER_01Do you have a DEX negatives?
SPEAKER_03No. It's flat.
SPEAKER_04I'm 11 with armor and shield.
SPEAKER_01So leather is only one more than our robes. Oh, okay. That's where my confusion was.
SPEAKER_04Okay. Well, this is uh like it's a combat now, so we do have a set of different.
SPEAKER_00So you your torch sputters to life, and you see Union and Roke and Naryath and yourself. No one else. And the girl. And no me. And no Aram. Are there any bubbles in the water?
SPEAKER_02Any indication of where he might be?
SPEAKER_00You feel like some wave action happening. Is Shag and crew there?
SPEAKER_03No, they're back in the cave. Yeah, I told him to. So I will try to stab the chitness thing that's got a hold of me with my sword. Alright.
SPEAKER_00Attack at disadvantage because you can't see shit.
SPEAKER_05You attack the darkness.
SPEAKER_00Can't touch them.
SPEAKER_05You don't touch them at all.
SPEAKER_00That would be a 10. Plus anything?
SPEAKER_03Don't you get pluses? With my pluses. Disadvantage.
SPEAKER_00Yep. Now your uh your your sword thrust finds no purchase.
SPEAKER_03Okay. And it's got a hold of me.
SPEAKER_00It's got a hold of you.
SPEAKER_04So I'm gonna die.
SPEAKER_03Alright, cool.
SPEAKER_04I'm pretty sure.
SPEAKER_00I try to go fishing again with where the bubbly now that I can see what I'm gonna do. Okay. Roll me another D6. Sure. A three. Were you drowned for the five? Okay. Probably. Although you feel the you the grappling, your grapple hits you on the head. It doesn't do any damage. But you feel right. You could grab it. You could grab the rope because you feel that it's a that it's a grappling hook. Okay. Hey, you stab, you don't hit. He throws the grappling hook, hits you. You could grab that. It's not my action, though. No, it's it's not, but you could grab on it for next time. It'll still be there when your action comes around. If you are.
SPEAKER_05I'll drop the spent torch and grab. Alright. Roke. Comforting words from the GM.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I can't see nothing. This is our only piece of rope, correct?
SPEAKER_04No. The other one's down there with you. Our only piece of usable rope.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, maybe. Okay. I could it's all relative. Well, I know. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Will I be the first to disappear the water, wizard?
SPEAKER_04Sure. Levitate him from the depths. And I'm gonna cast burning hands on the water. Yeah, steamy. Or magic missile at the darkness. Throw some iron spikes in the water. You boil the water before you put the lobster in, right?
SPEAKER_05And the butter comes next.
SPEAKER_04That's the last.
SPEAKER_01Alright, yeah, I'm going to just hang out and see if I can assist with the moral support in any way, shape, or form. You have to spell old spray.
SPEAKER_04You guys got this. We got this. Oh, okay. Alright, so he threw the grapple and the hook in the water.
SPEAKER_00And you can tell, you can tell that he's grabbed it.
SPEAKER_04Alright. So he's got it. Something is grabbed. I want to get so in front of him, so let's draw it in a line, right? So we have union, rope, into the water, wherever Aaron is, right? So I want to get grab a hold of the rope and walk towards the edge and find where the edge of the pit is that falls down and stand right at the edge. So that way when he comes up, I can give him a helping hand right on the edge. Okay, it's about ten feet, and you feel the drop. Alright, right there. I stop and back off three feet. Okay. And wait for the inevitable something, hopefully. Fish his dead body at it. So when you get half of our bait for his left arm attached to the grappling hook, totally painting. Right, you see where I'm going with his bait. He is we're gonna we're gonna fish him out of the drink. He's gonna have a big old graph to him. Yep, and we're gonna kill it. We're gonna kill it. I am the rotten chicken then on a side. You are. Yeah. Yes.
SPEAKER_05And Snapper has taken the bait. No yet. I go up there to the edge as well and look.
SPEAKER_04Oh, right there.
SPEAKER_00What do I see? What do I see? Oh, I see. It's black murky water. But you have the torch, so this is good. Reflection. The rope is moving.
SPEAKER_05So I grab on the rope, ready to bite.
SPEAKER_00Do whatever you need to do.
SPEAKER_03No. Do you pull it up slow? No, no, we yank. You gotta set the hook.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we're gonna yank. Right. I don't know what is acting as the hook in the channel. Why you gotta be like that? The grappling hook.
SPEAKER_05Right, the grappling hook. Jiggin for fighters. Jigging for fighters.
SPEAKER_00Okay. So you're pulling. I'm gonna help as hard as we can.
SPEAKER_04Strength check. Everybody?
SPEAKER_03Or everybody that's pulling is. Well, I'm not.
SPEAKER_05I rolled an 11. What does that mean?
SPEAKER_03Add your strength modifier.
SPEAKER_00I have none. Okay. It depends on what the DC is. You make a firm tug, the rope doesn't budge. Yeah, of course not.
SPEAKER_04We need help. Everybody's pulling, right? It wasn't at the point we were all gonna pull. Yes.
SPEAKER_01I don't want my hands to get dirty.
SPEAKER_04Well, they won't.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. All right, and in unison. A run. You it is your turn now. So I've got one hand on the grappling hook.
SPEAKER_03One hand on your sword. One hand on my sword. And this thing's got me like my arm like right around the waist. Oh, lovely. And squeezing. Okay. And then drowning you. So I'm gonna try and like just stab the sword in. I can't see anything. Okay. But I'm gonna like slide it along until I hit like a joint.
SPEAKER_00Try to give you a regular tank roll for ingenuity.
SPEAKER_04Now I gotta take one out. How do I do that? Just dump until one comes out. It doesn't matter. You know what you're gonna roll.
SPEAKER_05Do you put up with this every session? No, yes.
SPEAKER_04We put up with a lot more than that.
SPEAKER_06I'm sorry. There you go.
SPEAKER_00This is just one of the things. That's the most politically correct way. A 12. Yeah, your sword slides off of something hard and unyielding. I'm going to die. I'm going to heighten this shit. No, we're yanking you out right now. And it attempts to clamp down. It clamps. Okay. And something in your armor doesn't allow it to get the purchase that it wants. It doesn't do any damage this round. I'll hail the leather. Wow.
SPEAKER_01The leather. That is the world's toughest leather.
SPEAKER_00Well, it is now that it's in the water. Now we're back to union. It's going to fit great. Yes. Everybody grab the rope. And as one, we shall pull. Alright, so you're um you're all grabbing the rope? Nope. Yeah. Well, except for him. Okay. He's not. I'm gonna blast his hand if it follows. Do any of the three of you have a strength bonus? Yeah. No. You do? Yes. And you should roll. You don't? You do not. No, I'm an 11. I'm a strength 11. So you get your strength bonus plus one for each of those guys. Okay.
SPEAKER_04So plus three essentially or four. I don't know what your bonus is.
SPEAKER_00Plus one.
SPEAKER_05Oh, or plus one.
SPEAKER_00So with all that, it'd be uh 16. 16. Okay. You pull and there is give.
SPEAKER_05What kind of give?
SPEAKER_00Who's got the net coming coming to the surface, spluttering, with a massive claw around his midsection. You're heaving a much bigger bulk than just a run up through the water. Okay. And a run gasps for breath as his head breaks the surface. You're in the light, you see your friends. And coming up behind him, you see the monstrosity of a large lobster-looking figure. The carapace in the front has tentacles coming out. About eight of them. And two massive pinchers.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Robster Cross.
SPEAKER_00Roke, your turn. Who's got a blunt one? Magic missile. Okay. Roll a cast.
SPEAKER_01I roll that at advantage because magic is always a good one.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I have a weapon like a vice. Crack the claw.
SPEAKER_0117.
SPEAKER_04Okay, your spell succeeds. Damn it, now I'm hungry for sure. Oh, did you use your bonus die there?
SPEAKER_01You roll it advantage for magic missile always.
SPEAKER_05Oh, okay. Wizard the missile.
SPEAKER_04That's gonna be two points of damage. The wizard casts his first spell and the lights start blinking. That's right. Yeah, that can't be good.
SPEAKER_00That is the arcane energy possessed by not Roke, but Doc. That is Doc's own arcane energy. If I could cast spells for light source. Watch out. See, light sources are even a problem in the magic missile glows and strikes the large crustacean. Does it let go? It does not. And we are down to Mr.
SPEAKER_04Dirk. Alright. So I'm not sure if I had my shield out or not, but I drop it behind me, reach out my left arm, and grab onto anything I can off of Aaron, and then I reach back with my right and I pull with one arm while I smash forward against the crab or lobster monstrosity with the other. Okay.
SPEAKER_00In other words, I hit it with my mace. Alright. That's a good idea. You'll have to grab it. So make me a normal dex check, which means you have to make 12.
SPEAKER_04Oh, great. That's um that's probably better than my decks of six and having to roll under. Fifteen minus two. Okay, you still succeed.
SPEAKER_00So you can get 13. You can do the maneuver, which gives you an advantage to hit. So I got two dice to hit? Yes. With my d20 rolls?
SPEAKER_04And you choose the better of the two. Wow. Nice. And I'm gonna- We all played 5e. What? I don't know how I have advantage, but I'm cool with that.
SPEAKER_00I'm giving you advantage because of your maneuver and you succeeded at it.
SPEAKER_04Right. And I rolled an 18 to hit the crabstrosity with my mace, which does damage. I hope. D6. Thanks, because that's what definitely what I was looking up. D6 crushing damage as I crush out his crab meat for future consumption.
SPEAKER_00Woo! Six points of damage. Okay, your mace crunches down into the hard outer shell of the thing, and its massive pincher releases a run.
unknownNice.
SPEAKER_04Yay!
SPEAKER_00Under the water.
SPEAKER_04Hopefully that doesn't unbalance us both into the water, because I am very not dextrous.
SPEAKER_00And you can see the two pinchers above the water in the in the creature's antennae and tentacle laced head above the surface of the water, Naryov, it is your turn.
SPEAKER_05Can we as a group continue to pull?
SPEAKER_00Or is that well right now the only thing attached to the rope is Aran, so you can pull him further out if you want.
SPEAKER_05Yes, definitely want to.
SPEAKER_00Okay, so you can pull Iran sputtering out into the rest of the cave away from the chasm shelf. And Iran is your turn. The lobstrosity.
SPEAKER_03Okay. So I'm like back behind the group at this point.
SPEAKER_00You're I don't think he has the strength to throw you behind him. Fair enough. So you're at the level that he is. I'm using you as a shield.
SPEAKER_04So you're a couple feet from the chasm edge where the I got a hold of him with one arm, and you he's holding on the rope and you're pulling.
SPEAKER_03So we're moving in the right direction. Since my sword seemed pretty ineffective, I'm going to switch to my crossbow.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And you're loading it. Yeah. Okay. So that'll be the action for the round. Right, right. The thing, I guess it has the choice of three targets, be you three, basically. Oh, nice knowing you, James. So one, two, three, four, five, six. And roll that shit out in the open. I will. Hide that shit behind the screen. And it attacks. And that makes sense, right? You're not gonna argue. You were the one that heard it. It makes sense to me, too. And this will be an attack at plus four. Plus, that's a lot. That is. So 14. Plus four. And that does two points of damage. And the creature is now holding Dirk. Yay! Union. Can I strike? Am I close enough to hit you? Yes. Okay. I'll give it a whack. Alright. You don't think it might may have noticed you.
SPEAKER_04If you have any skills related to stabbing, but not for a thief that might have.
SPEAKER_03Yes, yes. Extra damage dice, I think. It is.
SPEAKER_04I don't know.
SPEAKER_03I gained advantage on the issue, but that's what I should. Well, yeah, you get, I think the backstab is an extra die of damage. Right, but I have to actually hit it, right? You do.
SPEAKER_04Get on with it. Oh, that's gonna be fantastic. I rolled a one. Natural? Natural one. Oh man, what an introduction.
SPEAKER_03I was trying to decide. He was trying to backstab it. I was trying to backstab it with my sword.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Your sword falls out of your hands and into the water. And I'm going to roll a D6, and I'm not going to tell you the result of it. See whether it's on the shelf or on the bottom, I guess. Okay.
SPEAKER_01It's in the water. Plunk. Roke. So we're all up on this thing.
SPEAKER_00Everybody's breathing air right now. Alright.
SPEAKER_05Is that a donkey?
SPEAKER_00No. I think it was a circular saw.
SPEAKER_03See, it sounds more like a power tool.
SPEAKER_05Okay. Not where I'm.
SPEAKER_03Donkeys we can't have here. You're allowed.
SPEAKER_00You can't have pigs either, but.
SPEAKER_03You're allowed a single potbelly pig.
SPEAKER_00Because you fought for the right. Yes.
SPEAKER_03And you have made up to six hens.
SPEAKER_05You've made it. And if I move here, I can't. Okay, you're stabbing it with a dagger.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. All right. Potbellied pigs. That hits. 17 on the nose and four points.
SPEAKER_00Ooh, okay. Nice. All right.
SPEAKER_01Apparently we're mowing the lawn, too.
SPEAKER_00Wizard, not according to type, stabs the stabs the thing, and the you feel the dagger bite in between a couple of the manage slots.
SPEAKER_04Right? Wait, what don't you lose them though, right? Not a two. You do if you if you don't cat if you don't succeed. Right, but he succeeded, so you could have magic missile again, technically.
SPEAKER_01I took that as I only can cast four per day. No, I can keep casting.
SPEAKER_00You can cast and keep casting magic missile until you fail casting magic missile. Or like interesting cantrips then. Very well. Okay. Until you fail. Until you fail. Which could be catastrophic. Then they're gone. All right.
SPEAKER_01Until you rest. Either way. It's got me. I stabbed it for more than I would do it with a magic missile anyway.
SPEAKER_00You can struggle and make a DEX andor strength check to try to break free. Alright.
SPEAKER_04I'm going to attempt a strength test to break free. Essentially, I'm going to be moving in the opposite direction from where the hole is that it came out of. I'm guessing my DC 8 six failure of a strength test that's going to be a good thing.
SPEAKER_00You were caught in the pincher of the thing.
SPEAKER_04And the crab crushed into my thigh.
SPEAKER_05Ouch.
SPEAKER_04Or whatever.
SPEAKER_05That's it for me. Alright. I'm going to strike the thing with my long sword, attempting to make it let go, whatever it has to be.
SPEAKER_00Gonna hit him maneuver. Okay, make me a dex check. Need to make 12.
SPEAKER_0516. Okay.
SPEAKER_00Alright, so uh advantage on the check.
SPEAKER_05Ooh, advantage.
SPEAKER_04On which check? The swinging itself? On the swinging of the sword.
SPEAKER_05Oh okay. I rolled four both times.
SPEAKER_00Okay. So the thought was there, and it was beautiful. But it did not succeed. And those are really pretty dice, but if they don't roll, your swallow clangs off of the wall. Oh, you know what I mean.
SPEAKER_05Brand new, never used dice. A run.
SPEAKER_03So I'm going to shoot it with my crossbow. Okay. Oh wow, it's got me. There's a lot more to this thing than the claw that's around your waist.
SPEAKER_04Is there more to the rules?
SPEAKER_00The rules are very nebulous at the subject.
SPEAKER_04Don't you have a good strength? Yeah. Smash it then. No, shoot it with the crossbow. Well it's got me.
SPEAKER_00I missed.
SPEAKER_03Shoot it.
SPEAKER_00Did you? Yeah. Sprung and the uh the bolt splash.
SPEAKER_03Well, see, I tried to hit it with my sword twice while I was underwater and it just bounced right out. Yeah, okay.
SPEAKER_04I just stabbed it with a dagger. He's underwater. Anyway. Anyway.
SPEAKER_00I rolled a 19.
SPEAKER_04To crush me some more?
SPEAKER_00To crush you some more. Alright. Yep. You're crushed. Yep, definitely getting crushed.
SPEAKER_03Eric just took my 20, by the way.
SPEAKER_00Actually, three points of damage. He stole it. Is that how it works? He stole it. Ah. And the creature disappears into the water. It crushed me and then let go? Oh, wait, what? Dirk in its grab.
SPEAKER_03Oh shit. Weren't you guys holding on? Bye, Dirk. How can we hold on?
SPEAKER_05He was. He actually did have a hold of him.
SPEAKER_00No, he was trying to hit it.
SPEAKER_05I was trying to hit it so it would release him.
SPEAKER_00Right. Alright, Union. Actually, who was holding the torch? Okay. Not me. All right.
SPEAKER_01Because that would have been so ridiculous if we lost another torch. Another one to water. Freaking two minutes.
SPEAKER_05I throw the torch at the crap. It would just make you more. Throw the torch at the torch.
SPEAKER_04You need to see. Doc's dying to be right about the torch situation. I'm gonna. Oh, you're open. And you won't. The random encounter table is torch-related incidents.
SPEAKER_00I can see what where they went in. You can see the direction that they went in. You can't see them. Dive in. Do it. Okay. Roll me a D6. A three. Okay. Oh, you're fishing for it. You feel the draping of the rope over your shoulder as you're sliding down into the abyss. I loop it around my arm. Good one. And then you can grab it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. I loop it around my arm. I don't just rely on my own strength, which is pitiful.
SPEAKER_01I'm imagining like this is swamp people. Swamp ogers, maybe. And I'm up there. Shoot it. Shoot it. All right. Oh, the the Of course I'm gonna shoot it. Well, you can't.
SPEAKER_00It's underwater now.
SPEAKER_01It's it always hits. It's magic missile. That's amazing. Yeah, but you do have to see it. You do have to see it. Alright. So burning hands to water and boil that now.
SPEAKER_04You save that for when we kill it. Parboiled dirt.
SPEAKER_01We can eat it.
SPEAKER_02First, we have to kill it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'm gonna do it, however. I'm gonna I'm gonna work on increasing our morale. He dances. Come on, you got it.
SPEAKER_00Pull him up. Yeah, I don't got nothing. Okay. Dirk, you were in in the water, in pain, being held. You have a rope.
SPEAKER_04I don't know how spellcasting works in this particular It just does. Right.
SPEAKER_02So do I need to make loud verbal prayers and gestures, or can I make a silent prayer to my deity and say, Oh, please, St. Tyrannus, Tyragnus, however you say your name, I'm drowning.
SPEAKER_00No, you have to attempt. What do you mean?
SPEAKER_04No, I'm just kidding. Y'all allow it. I don't know. Yeah. It's if we knew how the rules work, that would have been funny. No, that's fine. So what I'm gonna do here is I'm going to attempt a casting, uh it's a cast cure wounds upon myself. Okay. While underwater with the giant crab monstrosity. All right. And now, I don't know if this difficulty is extra difficult, but I extra failed. Doesn't really matter. But I'd also like to use my actual die, extra die here. But I've been saved for being supremely clever about something I've already forgotten about.
SPEAKER_00Alright, yeah, I forgot about it too.
SPEAKER_04Of which I rolled an 11 plus five for a 16 DC success. I rolled, I got a wisdom of 17, very wide. Oh, okay. Very good. And I rolled both my rolls were plus two my cast. Two plus your okay. Yeah, both my so I got plus two. That's the only things I got. Your curlate root wounds is going to be dynamite. Right. And actually, well, the way it works is you get a D6 plus your essentially half your levels rounded down. So essentially two divided by half is one. So I get two d6 of healing. Okay. If I read the spell correctly, did you read it that same way? I have not read it. But you have it on your spell. Well, number of dice equal to one plus half your level rounded down. Right, one plus one target. What? Okay. And I heal myself a majestic two points. Five, because that's all I had. But I'm fully health. Your future doesn't look any better. I'm good. I have just the nub.
unknownI'm good.
SPEAKER_04That's what she said. I was gonna say I hope so, but yes, that is what she would say. I'm done. As I I like I said, I already got the rope.
SPEAKER_00Eric, how was Noriav dealing with the current situation right now?
SPEAKER_05I guess we can't see him anymore. Can't see him anymore. We have the rope. I can grab the rope. We have the rope, yeah. I hold on to the rope.
SPEAKER_04Okay. Oh, it's getting pulled on because I'm pulling with my arm. I will grab the rope to hold him.
SPEAKER_00You're gonna have opposed strength checks.
SPEAKER_05When we can, we will pull.
SPEAKER_00Alright. All right. I'm going to pull the rope. Oh, so you're gonna you're going to pull? Yes. He hasn't had a chance to put his hand on it yet, so it's you two. You don't have a strength bonus, so you will get whatever your strength bonus is plus one.
SPEAKER_03Roll high.
SPEAKER_05I took your 20.
SPEAKER_03I know, right? So 12. 12, 15 total. Okay. I'm sorry. 16. 16. All right. He did it last time.
SPEAKER_00You pull dirk out of the water. And only Dirk. Okay, that's good. That's fine. All of Dirk.
SPEAKER_03He's not wounded for some reason. Oh, that's okay. If all the parts are there, I'm good.
SPEAKER_05I was thinking we'd have a quick jerk and an arm case.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Language. I'm thinking parts of dirk. Language.
unknownQuick jerk.
SPEAKER_05All right.
SPEAKER_00All right, so increasing morale. So so editing is going to be heavy on this one. All right, Dirk, you are out of the water.
SPEAKER_04Great. You uh you gasp for air. I come up spluttering player prayers. So we're all I step. Like if I have the opportunity to move away from the little area where the water goes deep, I do so. Okay.
SPEAKER_03So we're all detached from the giant lobster and moving away. Dry land, quote unquote dry land. Well, which is a foot deep water, essentially. Right, yeah, like a foot and a half, two feet. But it ain't sneaking up on us in that foot deep water. No way, man. Right.
SPEAKER_04Now, you, when you were down there, how wide was that thing? Because I don't know if it just falls off and keeps going deep. I don't know.
SPEAKER_00Right, he didn't get a chance to get explored. He was busy. He didn't have a chance to fully. You didn't explore and mirror up. I'm going to search for my sword. I'm gonna go, where'd my sword go? Okay.
SPEAKER_04If you find my shield, let me know it's on the ground too.
SPEAKER_00So we'll have a sword and a shield on that. I left my shield on purpose. You feel around on the shelf area near boat near where you are, and you don't feel around for the sword. Okay. Did I feel anything to find a shield? The shield you found, yeah. Okay. No, but I I keep searching around the side. Yeah, he cast the shield away on purpose. No, it's okay. I know where it went. You lost yours in an attack, and it's not up on the on on the above shelf. That's inconvenient, at least on this side. A couple of bubbles rise up in the center of the uh crab with a sword.
SPEAKER_05Right, it's gonna come up wielding his sword at us. Right.
SPEAKER_04Would be actually. And now this crab thing, it wasn't a half crab, half man like you saw. A giant lobster. All crab.
SPEAKER_00It's more lobster than crab.
SPEAKER_04I keep calling it crab, but what is it?
SPEAKER_05What is a lobster? No crustacean. No fake lobster. All lobster. Right.
SPEAKER_01Well, now what? Okay, so we know we have a big underwater something going on in front of us. Lobstrosity. Is there exits to the left? They went to the they just blacked out to the left and right, right?
SPEAKER_00Oh, correct. You you still haven't gone beyond the original torchlight.
SPEAKER_04All right. Well, we need to explore this room a little bit more. What we really need is what, a 10-foot pole or something. Right to find the edge of the four before we were in the boat. You really had one? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I had a in my mind, I was a wizard with a large staff.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, of course you were. Yeah, because you could easily find the edge without risking a limb. Yeah, now you're gonna fish along the edge with your foot, trying to find it. Well, sword. So you're using your foot, and you're like, all right, edge, and then the the next moment you put your foot in and it's taken by a crab. Yeah. Or lobster, right? It's a long sword. That would probably be Yeah, you could drag it along in the water. Yeah, yeah. I mean, who doesn't like to drag their long sword on the bottom of a cave floor to find where the hole is? Yeah. Keeps it sharp.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it does. Right. Lava rock sharpens.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, pumice is known for exactly exfoliation. Roke, you suggested that as an idea. Yeah. Are you moving anywhere at this particular point? Well, when in doubt, go left, right? Okay. Well, you're uh you're suggesting left. We are now down to Dirk. What's he doing again?
SPEAKER_01I'm suggesting we find another exit to this room. Oh, so we're just gonna be able to do that. And he's pointing to the north. And I'm like, maybe that way.
SPEAKER_04In this room, though. In this room. All right, well. Yeah, he's pointing to the north. We only have one door. Go ahead.
SPEAKER_05So I go to the north.
SPEAKER_00Okay. So you take ten feet north and you see that the there's like a ten foot wide cavern going off to the northwest. So to the left and then to the left a little bit more. And ahead of you, after that, like ten foot long, ten foot wide corridor, the there are passageways branching out to the left and to the right. And you see that the room that you're in with the crab thing extends even more to the east, but you don't see the end of that wall out to the east. Am I making any sense whatsoever?
SPEAKER_04Well, so you're saying there's something across the room, but it's across the room.
SPEAKER_00Right, you can't see all the way across the room to the east. Right. To the northwest, there's like a 10-foot-long, 10-foot-wide corridor that branches off in both directions. Right. And then there's a volcanic rock wall.
SPEAKER_05Do we still want to sword the chasm?
SPEAKER_04Well, I guess my question isn't that. It's more can you get to that branch off of this room without falling in a hole of water?
SPEAKER_05I don't know.
SPEAKER_04That's the question.
SPEAKER_00I try to Well, the falling in the hole of water is to the south of where you are. Okay, so you have avoided it far too. So far. So far.
SPEAKER_05So far. That's what I'm saying. If I go to that branch, is there more falling in the water?
SPEAKER_00That's a rhetorical question at this point.
SPEAKER_04We haven't rescued you yet. So we got we've got two rescues down. We've got a we understand how to do this now.
SPEAKER_05So where we were, the chasm part with the crab is in darkness now, right? Correct. Okay.
SPEAKER_04I'm gonna follow the torch. Do you there, you union, have a weapon, a backup weapon for the sword you threw at the crab? I do not. The lobster. Do you need a dagger or a club? A dagger would be handy, yeah. Alright, here you go. Cool. Borrow my dagger. Until such a time as you get a weapon worthy of your skill.
SPEAKER_05What's the interest in that? One blue gem. One blue gem. No dragon scales.
SPEAKER_04No dragon scans. Well, I don't recall our wizard saying I give the gem back to Union. So rogue might still have the gem. How many hold it?
SPEAKER_00Just asking for a friend. John and Eric might not be really aware of Doc's character history. Propensity.
SPEAKER_01Listen, I played a rogue last time.
SPEAKER_03He plays a rogue every time. He had a hat whether he plays a rogue or not. I get it. Winding up in his pouch.
SPEAKER_05The stuff is in your cloak right now that shouldn't be, isn't it? Maybe.
SPEAKER_04So what you really have here is you have a rogue playing a character. Pretend it's a wizard. A wizard rogue. A wizard rogue.
SPEAKER_01I steal magic. This is accurate. I steal magic.
SPEAKER_05I count my dragon scales. Yes.
SPEAKER_01Good idea. By the same token, I did not ask for it back either.
SPEAKER_00So Iran, you're following Nariath. Yes, I'm following the light. And now we're down to uh Union. Are you going along with the rest of the folks to the northwest? Obviously, if I haven't found my sword anywhere in the shallow water. Yeah, you take the offered dagger and move on. From Iran. Yes. And ropes. Are you going with the rest of them?
SPEAKER_01Yes, I am, and I think I probably would have kept the gem knowing that it is a magical piece of a puzzle. Because I'm the only one that can be entrusted with such great magic.
SPEAKER_03Wait, how do we know it's a magical piece of a puzzle? Y'all don't, but he does. I do.
SPEAKER_04I told you.
SPEAKER_03He said it's important and we shouldn't sell. He said so.
SPEAKER_04He never told us that. Yeah, I said a telecom. I wasn't sure myself to be honest.
SPEAKER_00This item is imbued with a mysterious aura. Do not sell it.
SPEAKER_04I mean I mean, I can't picture anybody around here having the do not sell it to all the merchants on this desert island. In this cave, you can't. Right, right. I'd like to trade it for a corsair ship. True.
SPEAKER_05We would. Yeah. We haven't seen that. And the crew?
SPEAKER_04No. We don't need that. We don't let the need to let anybody know we have that because let's face it, there's probably 30 of them, and there's five of us, plus our three friends back at the cave who are no doubt bleeding out on the what has Red been doing.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. She's uh chilling. She's twiddling her thumbs while we were dying into the lobster.
SPEAKER_00During the lobster fight, she just like hung out. She didn't she was like she like backed up to the rock walls of the west. Just beside the entrance where you entered the room, and she's just watching it all happen. I think she's cursed.
SPEAKER_04I say that, but then I look at her out of the side of my eyes. Yep, she's definitely cursed. All right. Well, so lead on here.
SPEAKER_00We're gonna we're gonna skip over to Narioth, the keeper of the flame. And everybody is behind you. And you are standing there in the middle of the northwest corridor. You see off to the left and to the right, there are passageways branching. And like very faintly from the north, you hear the sound of like tapping of metal on metal.
SPEAKER_05We hear a sound. Clank. Clang. Like an anvil. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Clank. And then there's a pause.
SPEAKER_04I think we should go investigate. Well, I mean, we really got a lot of choice here walking down this corridor, so we can either go towards the clank or turn all the way around and go back to the lobster inch.
SPEAKER_00It's it's hard to tell the the exact directional of where that sound comes from because it's bouncing off of the cavern wall.
SPEAKER_05So we don't know which way.
SPEAKER_00It could be the lobster.
SPEAKER_05No louder clank from one way or the other. I guess so.
SPEAKER_04He's banging his sword against the wall or something.
SPEAKER_05So we want to go to the left, is this the rule, or no?
SPEAKER_04You go. We're following you. That's Sean's rule. Yeah. When Dalko left. Okay.
SPEAKER_03I go to the left. Oh, fool.
SPEAKER_00Okay. You turn to the left, and that passageway splits off after only about five feet or so to a north and a south corridor.
SPEAKER_04There's still water on the lower level. Like we're like at our feet, right? We're still walking right a foot or whatever you said of water. Correct.
SPEAKER_05Is there any incline to any of this?
SPEAKER_00We'd say the inclines a little bit more to the north than the south.
SPEAKER_05Wanna go to the north? Go up.
SPEAKER_04That's right. Let's go up. I don't know. Go to the north. Your logic is infallible. Shh. Go north. So we want to go right.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_04I'm going where the water is. Passageway is about leads.
SPEAKER_00About five feet wide. And you can see it stretches off about 20 feet to the north. And following that, you hear another couple of clangs and then it stops.
SPEAKER_04Guess the lobster broke his sword.
SPEAKER_05He's playing with the sword. So this just continues to be a just a passage going north and then it ends in darkness. And then it ends in darkness. We keep going towards the darkness, I guess.
SPEAKER_04Okay. Alright, so how much now we know the time how much has passed on our torch? We have 20 minutes left on the torch. But how much total time has passed? Is it approximately noon-ish? I guess what I'm really getting at here is all right, we've talked about the tides. We've put the full moon, that means let's spend down here about an hour. Theoretically, yeah. So like we're we would be in my like nine o'clock in the morning or something, maybe 10. Which means the tide would have been rising between 6 a.m. and now till like it would peak approximately noon, let's say. I figured you lost me the stuff. Because of the cycle of the moon. Midnight is essentially the fullest of the moons. The moon rises at six, right? So the main high tide on the opposite or would be opposite would be low tide, would be noon. I don't really know how that, but because you have two high tides in a 24-hour period, right? So you're gonna have a high tide coming up, and we're still in the cave.
SPEAKER_03I think we're above two high tides in a 24-hour period. I'm asking. No, big high tide. There's high tide and low tide. And then there's another in a 24-hour period. And that's it. That's it. Everybody's sure of this. I don't think so.
SPEAKER_04There's a high tide and there's a low tide in each day. Hold on. The Navy man's got it.
SPEAKER_05Oh, okay. Yeah. Never mind. You're the Navy man.
SPEAKER_04Well no. Google.
SPEAKER_00Are you being moved and looking up Google on tides? Yeah, because this I Because it matters, right? I mean, we might be stuck in the. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Ish. What if tides weren't?
SPEAKER_00Exactly.
SPEAKER_04Why don't you ask the wizard, if you can't, in case you don't know. I am.
SPEAKER_05We're safe from the high tide in any event.
SPEAKER_04I think you might be right, but I'd like to kind of know if we're gonna have to get drowned in the cave or not.
SPEAKER_05Because the door didn't get wet.
SPEAKER_00You can get drowned in the cave without the tide.
SPEAKER_03Well, yeah, Sean proved that almost. Tide goes out in the day, comes in at night. Overnight it's high. Yes. Many lower. It's not necessarily uh two high tides and two low tides.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, because the earth rotates as well. Right. Two high tides and low two low tides. Right. But there's one is a higher and higher high tide. And this would be the lower high tide. The higher high tide. Right, which is how it cycles through.
SPEAKER_05Unless it doesn't work that way here.
SPEAKER_00It's not DD unless you get totally into the weeds.
SPEAKER_05That is in the weight tide.
SPEAKER_00Like way more scientific than if your characters would be. Exactly.
SPEAKER_05So I walk down the passageway. Yes, there you go.
SPEAKER_03Continues forward. Again, we are trying to go up uphill anyways. Right. That shouldn't be a factor. Hopefully.
SPEAKER_05And even in this far end, we shouldn't be that big of a deal. It might get like another foot up.
SPEAKER_04I'd like to think maybe the GM won't drown us in a cave via the tides if we don't get out of it soon enough. But hey, anything's happening.
SPEAKER_05Usually they'd be your water down the tunnel.
SPEAKER_04If I'm not having fun, I would definitely. There are two high tides and two low tides in a 24 hour. There you go. And we would be the tides will be coming up. That's all we needed to know. High tides occur 12 hours and 25 minutes apart.
SPEAKER_01And the same with low tides, but they're on and off cycle. Gotcha. It's like about six hours you have to go over there.
SPEAKER_05The moon comes out during the day, too. It's behind the planet.
SPEAKER_00So Naryath, you're leading them to the north. Yes. Who is behind Naryath?
SPEAKER_04Why? Everybody.
SPEAKER_00Like like just give me a basic. I'll be second. There you go. Okay. Aran is second. I'll be third.
SPEAKER_04Just go in order. I'll go four here. And I'll be five.
SPEAKER_05This sounds like combat order. Okay.
SPEAKER_04Yes. Of course it is. Who gets their ass right behind me? Why don't I take it?
SPEAKER_00So you reach the end of the corridor and you see that there's a room beyond. Room. A cavernous room. And sort of first impressions on the room is actually, it does seem a bit rectangular for a natural cavern, but it's not block walls or anything like that. But this room has obviously been hewn into a geometric shape of a rectangle. Across the room from where you and looking back at you, your torchlight shining off of their bulbous eyes are two man-sized figures that almost seem like half fish. Are we in the insmoth? They are apparently trying to drive a spike in the doorframe of a stone door that is across the room from you. And that's where we'll pick it up next time on Retro Rollcast.
